PPolice operatives on routine patrol along Kaani, Bori, in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, have disrupted what authorities described as a suspected targeted assassination attempt, with an AK-47 rifle and two live rounds recovered after the suspects fled.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, according to the Nigeria Police Force’s latest state-by-state operational summary.
The police said the suspects abandoned the rifle after encountering operatives during the patrol and escaped from the area.
The recovered weapon was an AK-47 loaded with two rounds of live ammunition.
The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, in Port Harcourt for investigation.
What Police Have Confirmed
The police account is brief but significant.
According to the operational report, officers were conducting a routine patrol along Kaani in Bori when they encountered circumstances that led them to disrupt what the Force described as a “suspected targeted assassination attempt.”
The suspects fled, leaving behind what police identified as an AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition.
The official status of the case is recorded as: “SCID Port Harcourt Investigating.”
No suspect has been publicly identified or arrested in connection with the incident as of Wednesday, 16 September.
The police have also not publicly identified the person allegedly targeted, disclosed the suspected motive or stated whether the suspects fired at officers or any other person before fleeing.
Those unanswered questions now sit at the centre of the investigation.

The July killing prompted calls for stronger security measures in Khana.
Khana Local Government Chairman Thomas Bariere described the attack as a “senseless act of violence” and expressed concern about other violent incidents in the area, according to reports at the time.
The incidents are geographically connected by their occurrence in Bori and Khana LGA, but there is no evidence publicly released by the police linking Kine’s killing to the latest suspected assassination attempt.
Any such connection would have to emerge from the ongoing investigation.
From Routine Patrol to Criminal Intelligence
The latest incident also highlights the importance of routine patrols in detecting armed criminal activity before violence occurs.
The police characterisation of the operation as a routine patrol suggests that the encounter was not publicly described as the result of a specific intelligence-led raid.
Yet the recovery of a military-style rifle during a patrol raises questions about how armed groups move through populated areas without detection.
