After much pressure, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally agreed to visit all the states that witnessed violence recently for the purpose of on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused to lives and properties of cutizens.
This was made know in a statement issued on Monday by The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.
The statement said the President has decided to begin the journey on Monday with Taraba State as his first port of call but did not however specify the dates of the trips to the other four states; nor state why Rivers State was lumped along with the other states with communities that suffer ongoing acts of
terrorism perpetrated by the dreaded Fulani/herdsmen militia.
Here are excerpts from the statement, “In view of recent terrorist attacks, criminal activities and communal clashes in some states leading to tragic loss of lives and kidnapping of 110 schoolgirls, President Muhammadu Buhari immediately tasked the Armed Forces and other security agencies to compile comprehensive reports on the various incidents.
“Having received and studied the Reports, the President has decided to undertake an on the spot assessment of the various occurrences and to meet and console the communities affected.
“From today, March 5, he will visit Taraba, and subsequently Benue, Yobe, Zamfara and Rivers States.
“President Buhari has been receiving daily briefings, and has been in constant touch with the Governors, and has been updated with situation reports.
“The President calls on all Nigerians especially those in the affected areas to cooperate fully with the security agencies to enable them curb the spate of crimes, bring those responsible to justice and prevent further occurrences.”
It is still baffling how the President of Nigeria managed to stay this long before arriving at this decision.
You will recall that General T.Y Danjuma who hails from Taraba State held a secret meeting with General Ibrahim Babangida over this same issue of unchecked Fulani/herdsmen terrorism.
Many believe this decision may have been influenced largely by that and the outrage expressed by millions of Nigerians who saw him merrymaking in Kano at the extravagant marriage feast between the son of the Oyo State Governor and the daughter of Kano State Governor.
