Hon. Ajisafe Kamoru Toyese has been appointment by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its new National Vice Chairman (South West). And his nomination has rightfully generated controversy and criticism. The decision which was reached by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has come under fire and accusations that it is undermining democratic values.
The nomination was made following the sad loss of Hon. Soju Adagunodo, the late National Vice Chairman (South West), and it has come under fire for not following democratic norms. Concerns have been raised regarding the party’s commitment to internal democracy and transparency following the NWC’s appointment of Hon. Ajisafe Kamoru Toyese without calling a special elective convention or meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
According to the description, the recently appointed National Vice Chairman is an engineer and lawyer who was the Deputy Director General of the 2023 PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation. Even though the appointment was purportedly approved during the South West Zonal Executive meeting on Thursday, January 25, 2024, concerns remain over the process’s openness and inclusivity.
In support of the appointment, PDP National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba cited PDP Constitution Section 46 (7) (as revised in 2017). Critics counter that considering the importance of the job, a more democratic and participatory process ought to have been followed in order to make the selection.
Hon. Toyese’s political track record, described as that of a “practical political mobilizer,” has been acknowledged by the party. He brings intellectual aptitude and years of experience to the leadership of the PDP, boasting proficiencies and connections at various levels of political engagement.
Despite the PDP’s pride in Hon. Toyese’s dedication and roles in mobilizing for the party, the appointment has sparked debates within and outside the party circles. Some argue that internal party democracy should be upheld to ensure that leadership positions are filled through transparent and fair processes.
As Hon. Toyese assumes his new role, the PDP charges him to use the position to unite and energize the party in the South West Zone. However, the controversy surrounding the appointment may linger, shedding light on the delicate balance between internal party dynamics and democratic values. Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story.
