JOS, Plateau โ In a dramatic and crucial series of operations, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division and Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) have successfully apprehended notorious gunrunners and recovered significant caches of arms and ammunition in Plateau and Kaduna States. The operations, conducted over the past week, highlight the military’s ongoing efforts to combat the rampant insecurity plaguing the region.

A Week of Tactical Operations and Successes
The series of arrests and recoveries began on June 21, 2024, when troops launched an operation targeting armed militias and other criminals in Pandam forest, located in Quaโanpan Local Government Area of Plateau State. This intelligence-driven operation resulted in the recovery of:
- 3 AK-47 rifles
- 5 AK-47 magazines
- 75 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition
These recoveries are not just numbers; they represent a significant blow to the operational capabilities of the criminal elements in the region. The AK-47, a favored weapon among bandits and militias, has become a symbol of terror and violence in Nigeria. Removing these weapons from circulation is a vital step towards restoring peace and security.
The Notorious Gunrunner Network
The operations took a significant turn with the arrest of a notorious gunrunner along the Riyom-Abuja Road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. This arrest was not a standalone event but part of a broader strategy involving the coordinated efforts of various security agencies. The apprehended suspect was on his way to supply 35 AK-47 magazines to another gunrunner. Unbeknownst to him, his counterpart had already been arrested in Kano State on June 20, 2024.
Interrogations and intelligence gathered from these arrests led to the immediate capture of a major arms supplier at Manchok in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State. This individual was caught while attempting to receive the 35 AK-47 magazines for delivery to bandits in Zamfara State. A subsequent search of the major gunrunner’s home revealed:
- 35 AK-47 magazines
- 60 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition
- 3 Bajaj motorcycles
- 3 mobile phones
- Items suspected to be local charms
The significance of these recoveries cannot be overstated. The arrest of key figures in the gunrunning network disrupts the supply chain of arms to bandits and militias, thereby weakening their operational strength and limiting their ability to inflict harm.
Community Cooperation: The Unsung Hero
The success of these operations underscores the importance of community cooperation in the fight against insecurity. Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Media Information Officer for Operation SAFE HAVEN, expressed gratitude to the general public for providing credible information that led to these significant recoveries. He urged the populace to continue their cooperation with security agencies to ensure a crime-free environment.
Community involvement is critical in intelligence-driven operations. Locals often have the best knowledge of their areas and can provide timely information about suspicious activities. This collaboration between the military and the community creates a formidable front against crime and insecurity.
The Broader Context: Nigeriaโs Security Challenges
The operations in Plateau and Kaduna States are part of a larger struggle against widespread insecurity in Nigeria. The proliferation of arms and the activities of armed groups have exacerbated the country’s security challenges, leading to increased violence, kidnappings, and banditry. The northern regions, in particular, have been hotspots of these criminal activities.
The government’s efforts, supported by the military, aim to address these issues through strategic operations like those conducted by Operation SAFE HAVEN. However, the complexity of the problem requires sustained and multifaceted approaches, including:
- Enhanced Intelligence Gathering: Strengthening intelligence networks to preemptively identify and neutralize threats.
- Community Engagement: Building trust and cooperation between security forces and local communities.
- Legislative Support: Enacting laws that support effective law enforcement and judicial processes.
- Economic Development: Addressing the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty and unemployment, through economic initiatives and social programmes.
The Role of Operation SAFE HAVEN
Operation SAFE HAVEN is a joint task force comprising military and paramilitary units aimed at restoring peace and security in the North Central region of Nigeria. Its mandate includes combating terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality. The recent successes highlight the operation’s effectiveness and the dedication of its personnel.
Major Zhakom emphasized the ongoing nature of these operations and the military’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements. He reassured the public that the troops would continue their efforts until peace and stability are fully restored.
Moving Forward: Sustaining the Momentum
The arrest of these notorious gunrunners is a significant victory, but it is not the end of the road. Sustaining this momentum requires continuous operations, community support, and robust policy frameworks. The government and security agencies must remain vigilant and adaptable to evolving threats.
Conclusion
The recent operations by the troops of 3 Division and Operation SAFE HAVEN are a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-driven military strategies in combating insecurity. The arrests and recoveries have dealt a substantial blow to the operations of armed militias and gunrunners in Plateau and Kaduna States. However, the fight is far from over. Continuous community cooperation, enhanced intelligence, and sustained military efforts are essential to achieving lasting peace and security in Nigeria.
As Nigeria navigates its complex security landscape, the lessons from these successful operations should serve as a blueprint for future efforts. The commitment and bravery of the troops, combined with the invaluable support of the community, are crucial pillars in the nation’s fight against insecurity. The public’s role in providing credible information cannot be overstated, and it is this partnership that will ultimately lead to a safer and more secure Nigeria.
