The Bayelsa Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja has affirmed the election of Senator Duoye Diri as Governor of the State.
The judgment is coming few weeks after the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by a former aspirant of the Bayelsa governorship election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Timi Alaibe, challenging the candidacy of Senator Diri in the November 2019 election.
The three Petitions decided today by the panel are that of Alliance for Democracy, United People’s Congress, UPC and Liberation Movement.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Owodunni, the tribunal held that the petition filed by Mr. Owei Woniwei of the AD is incompetent and lacks merit.
The Tribunal held that the petitioner failed to prove the allegations of the forged declaration of age and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharged certificate against the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The petitions by the Vijah Opuama of Liberation Movement and UPC candidate, Steve Ibiene, were also dismissed for lacking in merits.
A cost of N800,000 was awarded against Ibiene.
