As President Bola Tinubu marks his one-year anniversary in office, a wave of confusion has swept through the nation, fuelled by contradictory statements from his top media aides, Ajuri Ngelale and Bayo Onanuga. The mixed messages have left Nigerians puzzled about the President’s planned address, highlighting the apparent lack of coordination within the administrationโs communication team.

The Controversy Unfolds
On May 29, 2023, Bola Tinubu was inaugurated as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As he completes his first year in office, expectations were high for a significant presidential address that would highlight the administration’s achievements and outline future plans. However, the messages from his media aides have caused a stir, overshadowing the anticipated commemoration.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced earlier this week that Tinubu would forgo a traditional nationwide broadcast. Instead, he stated, the President would address a joint session of the National Assembly as part of a program commemorating 25 years of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not make a broadcast to the nation on Wednesday to celebrate his first anniversary as the leader of Nigeria,” Onanuga declared. “Instead, the President will address a joint session of the National Assembly, which has lined up a program to commemorate 25 years of the nationโs democratic journey at both the executive and legislative levels.”
Onanuga’s announcement included details about the planned National Assembly event, featuring speeches from notable figures such as former Senate President David Mark, current Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and former military ruler General Abdulsalami Abubakar. The highlight of the event, according to Onanuga, would be the commissioning of the National Assembly Library and Resource Centre, to be renamed the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building.
However, Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, quickly countered Onanugaโs statement. In a move that has sparked widespread confusion, Ngelale dismissed the information provided by Onanuga as “false.”
“In furtherance of his commitment to delivering good governance, President Bola Tinubu has embarked on the inauguration of strategic projects across the country,” Ngelale stated. “More transformative projects will be inaugurated by President Tinubuโs administration for the benefit of all Nigerians. In view of public commentary concerning the President delivering a speech before a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly tomorrow, May 29, 2024, it is important to state that this information is false and unauthorized as the Office of the President was not involved in the planning of the event.”
The Fallout
The conflicting statements have not only confused the public but also raised questions about the internal communication and coordination within President Tinubuโs administration. The contradictory announcements have led to speculation about potential rifts among the Presidentโs media team and the broader administration.
Observers and political analysts have been quick to weigh in on the situation. “This kind of miscommunication is not just an embarrassment but a significant setback for the administration’s credibility,” said political analyst Chinedu Ibe. “It raises questions about the coherence and unity of the President’s team, especially on such a significant occasion as the one-year anniversary.”
Public Reaction
Nigerians have taken to social media to express their bewilderment and frustration. The hashtag #TinubuAnniversary has been trending, with many users criticizing the administration for the apparent lack of clarity and coordination.
“This is unbelievable. How can the Presidentโs top aides be so out of sync? Itโs embarrassing and undermines whatever message they were hoping to deliver on this important day,” tweeted @NigerianVoter.
Others have called for greater transparency and better communication from the Presidentโs office. “This confusion is a clear sign that the administration needs to overhaul its communication strategy. The people deserve clear and accurate information,” posted @NaijaWatchdog.
The Bigger Picture
Beyond the immediate confusion, the mixed messages reflect deeper issues within Tinubuโs administration. Effective communication is crucial for any government, particularly one that has faced significant challenges and public scrutiny over the past year. The administrationโs ability to present a united front and deliver consistent messages is essential for maintaining public trust and confidence.
The economic and political landscape in Nigeria has been turbulent, with significant challenges such as rising inflation, security concerns, and public unrest. Amidst these challenges, clear and effective communication from the government is more important than ever.
Moving Forward
To address the fallout from this incident, it is imperative for President Tinubuโs administration to take swift action. Firstly, a clear and unified statement from the Presidentโs office is needed to clarify the situation and outline the administrationโs plans for the anniversary celebrations.
Secondly, an internal review of the communication processes and protocols should be conducted to prevent similar occurrences in the future. This review should include training for all spokespersons and media aides on the importance of coordination and accuracy in public statements.
Thirdly, the administration should consider appointing a single point of contact for all official communications to ensure consistency and coherence in messaging. This person would be responsible for coordinating with all relevant departments and ensuring that all public statements are accurate and aligned with the Presidentโs agenda.
Conclusion
As President Bola Tinubu marks his one-year anniversary in office, the administration finds itself in the midst of an embarrassing communication debacle. The contradictory statements from his media aides, Ajuri Ngelale and Bayo Onanuga, have cast a shadow over what should have been a celebration of achievements and a hopeful look toward the future.
This incident highlights the critical importance of effective communication in governance. For the sake of Nigeriaโs stability and progress, it is essential that the Tinubu administration addresses these issues promptly and takes steps to restore public confidence. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the administration can turn this situation around and refocus on the critical task of governing a nation in need of strong and decisive leadership.
