End of an Era? Ronaldo Drops Bombshell on Al Nassr Departure
Cristiano Ronaldo stunned the football world on Monday, posting a cryptic image of himself in an Al Nassr shirt alongside the message: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”
The 40-year-old Portuguese icon’s announcement arrived just hours after the Saudi Pro League curtain came down on a season that promised much but delivered little for the Riyadh giants.
Ronaldo, who swapped Manchester United for Al Nassr in December 2022 on a deal reportedly worth over £160 million per year, will see his contract expire in June.
During his 105 appearances across all competitions, he notched 99 goals – finishing this term as the league’s top scorer with 25 strikes – yet failed to secure any silverware beyond the Arab Club Champions Cup.
Despite personal brilliance, Ronaldo’s stay has been marred by collective shortcomings. Al Nassr bowed out of the AFC Champions League at the semi-final stage and trailed rivals Al Hilal in the domestic title race, ending third in the Pro League.
Critics argue that the world-class forward’s influence has not translated into sustained success, calling into question Saudi Arabia’s recruitment model of superstar acquisitions without corresponding squad depth.
With a special transfer window opening from 1–10 June to accommodate Club World Cup participants, Ronaldo is already being linked with a sensational short-term switch to a competing side in the United States tournament beginning 14 June.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed “discussions” are underway, igniting speculation that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could join one of the Brazilian entrants – Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense or Botafogo – or even link up with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami for a transatlantic reunion.
Yet, is this the right move for Ronaldo’s legacy? At an age when many peers have long since retired, his relentless pursuit of personal milestones – now standing at 937 official goals – risks overshadowing the narrative of a team player.
Al Nassr’s underwhelming campaign illustrates that even the greatest talents cannot compensate for strategic shortcomings at boardroom level.
The Portuguese maestro has invited us to watch the next chapter unfold. Whether he pedals towards a swansong in North America, returns to Europe, or paves an unprecedented path elsewhere, one truth remains: one of football’s greatest ever goal-machine still holds the power to captivate and confound in equal measure.
