Policeman on Trial for Killing Female Lawyer in Lagos: Witnesses Narrate How She was Shot

Female lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, allegedly murdered in Lagos by Police Officer Darambi Vandi.

On Wednesday, the trial of Darambi Vandi, the police officer who shot and killed a female lawyer on Christmas Day in 2022, resumed at a Lagos High Court.

The first prosecution witness, Insp. Matthew Ameh, testified during cross-examination by Vandi’s defense counsel, Mr Adetokunbo Odutola, that he heard a gunshot sound at the scene of the incident.

This testimony was consistent with what Ameh had previously stated when Vandi was first arraigned before the court on 16 January for the alleged murder of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem.

According to Ameh, he, Vandi, and another officer, Insp. Ebimine Fiyegha, were deployed at “Ajah Under Bridge” in Lagos to conduct a stop-and-search operation.

He stated that a Toyota car without a license plate was flagged down by Insp. Fiyegha, but the driver did not stop to be checked. Ameh also attempted to flag the car down, but the driver did not stop.

He then heard a gunshot, which he believed to have come from Vandi, followed by the noise indicating that Mrs. Raheem had been shot.

When questioned by the defense counsel, Ameh insisted that the noise he referenced in his statement could not have been anything else but a gunshot sound.

He stated, “When you hear the sound of a banger, it is different from a gunshot sound. A tyre bust sound is different from a gunshot sound.”

The third police officer at the scene of the alleged murder, Insp. Fiyegha, confirmed Ameh’s testimony during evidence led by the prosecution counsel, the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Moyo Onigbanjo (SAN).

Fiyegha stated that the trio of police officers at the scene of the incident was led by Vandi and that he also heard the noise shortly after the deceased and her husband slowly drove past him and Ameh in a Toyota Venza. He stated that the vehicle posed no threat to him or the public when it drove past.

The prosecution had previously told the court that Vandi committed the offense on 25 December 2022, at Ajah Roundabout on Lekki-Expressway in Lagos.

The defendant is accused of killing the lawyer, Mrs. Raheem, by shooting her in the chest, an offense that contravenes the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015). The hearing was adjourned to 26 January for the continuation of the trial.
