As a veteran on this beat I have seen many nights like this and none quite like Saturday in Fez. The Super Eagles delivered an attacking display with verve. They experienced late nerves to beat Tunisia 3-2. This victory secured their place in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16.

The goals were scored by Victor Osimhen, Wilfried Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman. The match swung from control to chaos and then back again.

Osimhen broke his tournament duck on the stroke of half time. He nodded home a precise cross from Lookman in the 44th minute. This gave Nigeria the lead.

The second half began perfectly for the Green and White. Captain Wilfried Ndidi doubled the advantage in the 50th minute. Lookman was again central to the move.

Lookman wrapped up Nigeria’s attacking chapter with a neat finish in the 70th minute after a slick one-two with Osimhen. Those passages showed exactly what this side is capable of when courage meets craft.

But the match was not to be a straightforward celebration. Tunisia rallied hard. Talbi pulled one back almost immediately after Lookman’s strike. The momentum shifted fully after Bright Osayi-Samuel’s handball. It led to a penalty, which Abdi coolly converted in the 87th minute.

The Super Eagles had to defend during a tense spell. They defended not just balls into the box. There was also the creeping question of whether they could see out such a fragile lead. In the end they did.

This result is as important for psychology as it is for progression. Nigeria had opened with a win over Tanzania. This victory cements their status as one of the Group C contenders. The performance underlines the value of a balanced spine.

Ndidi’s calm at the centre of midfield gives the team a foothold in the middle. Lookman’s work rate and vision have been the surprise attacking constant for the Eagles so far.

Osimhen may have been quiet earlier in the tournament but his header here reminded everyone of his matchwinning power.

Attention now turns to the last 16 tie against Uganda. The fixture is scheduled for Tuesday at 16:00 local time and will demand a different kind of discipline.

Uganda will come with belief after their group performances. Nigeria must balance their attacking impulses with greater defensive assurance to progress further.

On paper, the Super Eagles have the firepower to go deep in this tournament. However, knockout football examines temperament as much as it tests talent.

As ever with tournament football the narrative will be rewritten with every whistle. For now Nigerian fans may allow themselves a cautious smile.

The team showed ambition and flair. Crucially, they found a way to win when their opponents threatened to snatch the story. If the Super Eagles can temper their late-game wobble they have every right to dream.
