IKOYI, Lagos โ€” By arraigning one Olukeye Olalekan before Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has achieved a major victory in its battle against cybercrime. The defendant is charged with eighteen counts of child pornography transmission, fraudulent impersonation, and sextortion, totalling a whopping N721,500.00.

Olukeye Olalekan, charged in the allegations of purposefully setting up the Instagram group “Expose Janjua Robin Nudes” in order to disseminate child pornography. Monday, March 18, 2024.

Olukeye Olalekan is charged in the allegations of purposefully setting up the Instagram group “Expose Janjua Robin Nudes” in order to disseminate child pornography. He also allegedly kept a sizeable sum of money in his bank account, which was thought to represent the earnings from his illegal operations. Olalekan entered a “not guilty” plea to all charges, despite the gravity of the allegations.

S.I. Suleiman, the prosecutor, responded to the plea by asking for a trial date so that he could call witnesses and provide pertinent evidence. The prosecution did not object to defence attorney Segun Onikoyi’s motion for the defendant to stay on bail, though. Following that, Judge Ogundare set the trial date for June 3, 2024, preserving Olalekan’s bail status until then.

The accusations levelled against Olalekan present a worrisome picture of cybercrime activity, including the sextortion of vulnerable people and the distribution of child pornography. The EFCC’s prompt action in putting him on trial emphasises how serious these acts are and how determined they are to hold those who commit them accountable.

The public is waiting for more updates in what seems to be a closely followed trial as the case progresses. The EFCC’s dogged pursuit of justice in countering cybercrime serves as a strong reminder to anyone engaged in criminal internet activity. The conclusion of the trial, which is scheduled to begin, will not only have an effect on the accused but also serve as a stark warning about the repercussions of committing offences related to the internet.
