Troops of the Joint Task Force North West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA have recorded another set of battlefield gains, foiling coordinated terrorist attacks, neutralising a notorious commander and recovering arms in separate operations across Zamfara and Katsina states on Monday, 7 July 2026.

The latest successes, announced by the theatre’s Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, underline the continuing intensity of counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria’s North West, where security forces have remained in sustained contact with armed groups operating across rural communities, farming settlements and major transit routes.

In Zamfara State, troops of Sector 2 moved swiftly after receiving credible intelligence that terrorists were planning an attack on communities in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area. Working with local security volunteers, the soldiers engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and forced them to retreat after suffering casualties.

The force also responded to a separate attack on farmers around Dogon Kade, where troops neutralised a notorious terrorist commander identified as Alhaji Tukur, said to be the younger brother of terrorist kingpin Alhaji Shehu Bagiwaye. According to the theatre, several other terrorists escaped with gunshot wounds after the confrontation.

In another operation the same day at Sabon Gari, also in Kaura Namoda LGA, troops again mobilised quickly after reports of terrorist activity. On sighting the advancing soldiers, the terrorists abandoned their mission and fled into nearby bushes. A follow-up exploitation of the area led to the neutralisation of one terrorist and the recovery of a motorcycle reportedly used by the fleeing group.

The theatre said the operations reflect the importance of rapid response, local intelligence and sustained pressure on armed groups attempting to re-establish footholds in vulnerable communities.

In Katsina State, troops of Sector 2 on fighting patrol intercepted terrorists along the Danmusa–Yantumaki axis in Danmusa Local Government Area. The troops overpowered the assailants, compelling them to abandon their position and flee.

A subsequent exploitation of the location led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, two magazines loaded with 25 rounds of ammunition, and one motorcycle.

The military said the recovery of weapons and mobility assets would further reduce the terrorists’ ability to regroup and launch fresh attacks in the area. Such recoveries are often significant in operations against insurgent and bandit formations, which depend heavily on motorcycles for movement across difficult terrain.

The theatre also disclosed a major air operation carried out in support of ground troops, reinforcing what it described as the “air-land synergy” of the theatre.

Acting on credible intelligence, the Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA intercepted a large group of terrorists, estimated at about 300 fighters on motorcycles, moving from the Sunke–Kumbo axis towards the Bayazaki riverine area en route to Gummi. The group was believed to be preparing to unleash violence on innocent civilians.

According to the statement, three air platforms were deployed along the terrorists’ route of advance. On sighting the aircraft, the fighters attempted to disperse and hide under trees, but were engaged with precision airstrikes and neutralised before they could reach their target.

The theatre said the air interdiction successfully thwarted what it described as a nefarious plan, while also degrading terrorist capabilities in the wider North West axis.

It commended the Nigerian Air Force for what it called a decisive and timely intervention, saying the operation demonstrated the value of coordinated land and air offensives in dismantling armed networks and denying them freedom of movement.

Operation FANSAN YAMMA said it remains committed to sustained offensive operations against terrorists and criminal elements across the theatre, with a focus on protecting civilians, safeguarding livelihoods and restoring lasting peace and security in the North West.

In its statement, the theatre assured residents of its “unwavering commitment to denying terrorists freedom of action, protecting lives and livelihoods, and restoring lasting peace and security across the North West.”

The latest update comes amid continued military pressure on armed groups across Zamfara, Katsina and neighbouring states, where security operations have increasingly combined intelligence-led ground assaults, air surveillance and rapid exploitation of engagements to disrupt terrorist networks.

For communities in Kaura Namoda, Danmusa and surrounding areas, the operations are another indication that security forces are still actively contesting the operational space used by terrorists and criminal gangs to threaten civilians, farmers and travellers.

Lt. Col. Danja, who signed the statement on behalf of the Joint Task Force (North West), said the theatre remains resolute in its mission and will continue to sustain pressure on hostile elements until normalcy is restored across the zone.
