Oba Abimbola Owoade has been crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, following the death of his predecessor in April 2022. The coronation event blended ancient traditions with modern governance, attracting prominent figures and raising concerns about political tensions. Many speculate on Owoade’s potential to foster cultural unity amidst ongoing political challenges.

OYO, Oyo State – In a dramatic display of tradition and modern power, Oba Abimbola Owoade was crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in an event that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s cultural and political landscape.

The coronation, held at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo, was a spectacle of both ancient rites and contemporary pomp, marking a pivotal moment in Oyo’s storied history.

Oba Owoade’s rise to the throne follows the demise of his predecessor, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who passed away on 22 April 2022 at the venerable age of 83.

His death left a void that has now been dramatically filled by Owoade, whose ascension was met with an exuberant celebration from dignitaries and traditional leaders alike.

Among those present were luminaries such as the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; and the illustrious Aare Oona Kankanfo of Yoruba, Iba Gani Adams.

The event, presided over by Governor Seyi Makinde, was not without its controversies. Critics argue that the heightened security measures deployed by the Oyo State Government — including the strategic placement of security operatives across the ancient city and surrounding communities — hint at underlying tensions within the state’s political fabric.

Some political analysts contend that such robust security arrangements may signal a cautious approach to managing the potential for dissent or unrest as the new monarch consolidates his power.

Oba Owoade’s enthronement, preceded by the ceremonial presentation of the staff and instrument of office on 13 January 2025 at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, is further underlined by the completion of the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on 29 March.

This blend of modern statecraft and age-old customs offers a unique narrative, one that is both steeped in cultural heritage and fraught with contemporary political intrigue.

As Nigeria watches this transformative chapter unfold, many wonder: will Oba Owoade steer Oyo towards a renaissance of cultural unity, or will the shadows of political discord prove too daunting?

Only time will tell, but one thing remains clear – this coronation is not merely ceremonial; it is a clarion call for renewed debate and dynamic change in the heart of Nigeria.
