NDLEA issues stark warning to Nigerian drug barons

NDLEA Boss, Mohamed Buba Marwa issues stark warning to Nigerian drug barons.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has issued a stark warning to drug barons and cartels operating in Nigeria.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the NDLEA national headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday 18 January, Marwa declared that those who refuse to exit the illicit drug trade will face a harsher crackdown in 2023.

The press briefing was held to mark the second anniversary of Marwa’s leadership of the NDLEA and to update the public on the Agency’s efforts to combat substance abuse and drug trafficking in the country.

Marwa, who took over the helm of the NDLEA in January 2019, stated that the Agency has made significant strides in the fight against drugs during his tenure, but acknowledged that there is still much work to be done.

“We have made progress, but we are not resting on our laurels. We will continue to work tirelessly to rid Nigeria of the scourge of illicit drugs,” Marwa said.

“But let me be clear, those who refuse to back out of the drug business will face the full weight of the law in 2023. We will not tolerate any illegal activity that threatens the well-being of our citizens.”

Marwa went on to highlight some of the Agency’s achievements in the past two years, including the seizure of large quantities of drugs, the arrest of key drug traffickers, and the destruction of illicit drug laboratories.

He also emphasized the importance of public education and awareness in the fight against drugs, and urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant in monitoring the activities of their children and wards.

The NDLEA is a government agency with the mandate to coordinate and enforce the country’s anti-narcotics laws and policies.

Under Marwa’s leadership, the Agency has been working closely with other law enforcement agencies, as well as international partners, to combat the illicit drug trade in Nigeria.

Marwa’s warning to drug barons and cartels serves as a strong indication that the NDLEA is determined to intensify its efforts to rid the country of the drug menace in the coming years.

It also sends a clear message to those involved in the illicit drug trade that they will be held accountable for their actions.
