In a swift and dramatic move, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reshaped the corridors of power in Port Harcourt. He has named Hon Benibo Anabraba as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The governor has ordered Anabraba’s immediate swearing in today at 4pm. This will take place in the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House.
Anabraba served as Commissioner for Housing until his elevation. He was among the last set of commissioners appointed and confirmed by the Victor Oko-Jumbo led 3-man house.
He was also one of the officials affected by the recent Supreme Court determination. This ruling reconfigured the state executive and forced a cabinet reshuffle.
The timing is striking. Two weeks ago, Governor Fubara formally relieved all cabinet members affected by the court’s decision. He kept only eight commissioners in place.
The appointment of Anabraba is therefore not merely a personnel change. It is a signal of consolidation as Fubara seeks to reset his team after months of legal and political turbulence.
Government House sources described Anabraba as a loyal associate of the outgoing SSG Dr Tammy Danagogo. His name has become synonymous with the Wike era of Rivers politics.
Danagogo, who served as SSG in the prior administration, is a heavyweight figure. The replacement marks a clear pivot in Fubara’s inner circle.
Expect theatre not technocracy. Anabraba comes to the SSG office with a mixed political résumé. He was once a vocal legislator. His rise through portfolios reflects the factional bargaining that has defined Rivers politics since 2023.
The new appointment will be watched as a test of Fubara’s ability. He needs to stitch together a working coalition inside Government House. He also needs to work with Speaker Martin Amaewhule. This House of Assembly has been a decisive actor in past confirmations.
What the public should watch for is how swiftly Anabraba can translate patronage into policy. The SSG is at once chief administrator and political gatekeeper in the state.
He will be expected to coordinate delivery on Fubara’s marquee projects. He will manage relations with the Assembly and act as the governor’s chief troubleshooter. This is in a state where the political temperature remains volatile and sometimes combustible.
Reaction across social media and in political circles is already brisk. Supporters view the appointment as pragmatic. Others warn it risks perpetuating the intra-party feuds. These feuds have at times paralysed governance in Rivers.
Observers note that replacing a figure tied to the earlier dispensation will either ease tensions. It is also likely to inflame them. The outcome depends on how rapid and inclusive the transition is.
For now the scene is set at Government House with guests asked to be seated by 3.30pm ahead of a 4pm swearing in. The ceremony will be a focal moment for political messaging in Port Harcourt and beyond.
Expect photographs, official statements, and immediate analysis from the usual suspects. Ipsos style polling would place public appetite for stability above factional point scoring. Nonetheless, in Rivers, history shows that stability often remains fragile.
This appointment is more than a personnel story. It is a chapter in the still unfolding saga of Rivers State governance. Here, courts, assemblies, and the executive have traded blows and bargains.
The new SSG will have to navigate legacy loyalties, legal hangovers, and an electorate impatient for results.
If Anabraba succeeds, he will have remade his own narrative. He may also steady the governor’s ship. If he fails, the drama will only deepen.
