In a recent policy move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration announced the suspension of taxes on essential food items such as rice, maize, and wheat. While at first glance this may seem like a benevolent gesture aimed at alleviating the food crisis, a deeper examination reveals a stark contrast between the administration’s actions and its purported concern for the Nigerian populace. This article delves into the complexities of Tinubu’s policy decisions, uncovering a pattern of deception, inconsistency, and prioritization of personal and political interests over the well-being of the Nigerian people.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration announced the suspension of taxes on essential food items such as rice, maize, and wheat. While at first glance this may seem like a benevolent gesture aimed at alleviating the food crisis, a deeper examination reveals a stark contrast between the administration’s actions and its purported concern for the Nigerian populace.

The Facade of Benevolence

The suspension of taxes on food items is being heralded by Tinubu’s supporters as a sign of his commitment to addressing hunger and poverty in Nigeria. However, this gesture appears to be a strategic move to create a facade of compassion. If Tinubu were truly a caring leader, his actions would align more consistently with the needs and sufferings of the 130 million Nigerians facing hunger, starvation, disease, and death.

Extravagance Amidst Poverty

One of the most glaring contradictions in Tinubu’s administration is the allocation of N50 billion for the comfort of his official residence. At a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities, such an exorbitant expenditure is not only insensitive but also indicative of misplaced priorities. This lavish spending starkly contrasts with the reality of widespread poverty and deprivation in the country.

The Costly Fleet Replacement

Adding to the controversy is Tinubu’s plan to replace his fleet of planes, a move likely to cost taxpayers an astounding N900 billion. This decision is particularly egregious given the dire state of federal health institutions, which lack essential drugs and medicaments valued at a mere N500 million. A leader truly concerned about his people would prioritize healthcare over personal luxury, especially when the nation’s health infrastructure is in such a critical condition.

Subsidizing Pilgrimage for Political Gain

Tinubu’s administration has also given priority to subsidizing pilgrimages, a move seen by many as a tactic to score political points. This comes at a time when students are being forced into a toxic student loan scheme, further burdening families already struggling to make ends meet. A compassionate leader would focus on providing quality education and economic opportunities rather than diverting funds to religious subsidies for political gain.

Disproportionate Health and Education Funding

The disparity in funding allocation is further highlighted by the paltry N2 billion allocated to the National Hospital in Abuja for twelve months, which serves over 15 million patients annually. In stark contrast, N20 billion has been approved for the Aso Villa Clinic, which caters to fewer than 5,000 patients annually. This disproportionate funding is a clear indication of the administration’s skewed priorities, favoring the elite over the general populace.

Neglecting the National Library

In a country striving for educational advancement, the approval of only N980 million for the National Library while allocating N20 billion for the National Assembly library is a slap in the face to knowledge and education. This decision undermines efforts to improve literacy and educational resources for millions of Nigerians, further entrenching inequality and limiting opportunities for personal and national development.

Federal Universities vs. National Assembly Comfort

The approval of N327 billion for 15 million federal universities, which cater to over 25 million students, pales in comparison to the N322 billion allocated for the additional comfort of less than 500 National Assembly members. This allocation not only highlights the administration’s disregard for the educational sector but also its prioritization of the elite’s comfort over the future of Nigerian youth.

Unproductive Expenditures for Personal Gain

Perhaps one of the most egregious actions of Tinubu’s administration is the forcible removal of over N450 million to fund his wife’s unproductive trips. This expenditure is particularly callous given the malnutrition crisis causing the deaths of thousands of children. Such actions are a clear indication of an administration living in denial, disconnected from the harsh realities faced by the majority of Nigerians.

A Government in Denial

The actions of Tinubu’s administration reveal a government that is not only out of touch with the needs of its people but also actively engaged in policies that prioritize personal and political gain over public welfare. The suspension of taxes on food items, while seemingly beneficial, is a deceptive maneuver to mask the administration’s failure to address the root causes of poverty and hunger.

Critical Analysis of Policy Inconsistencies

The inconsistencies in Tinubu’s policies are not just a matter of poor governance but a deliberate strategy to mislead the public. By presenting token gestures such as tax suspensions, the administration seeks to create an illusion of benevolence while continuing to indulge in lavish spending and neglecting critical sectors like health and education. This pattern of deception undermines public trust and exacerbates the socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria.

The Role of Media and Public Perception

The media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and holding leaders accountable. However, in the case of Tinubu’s administration, there has been a significant effort to control the narrative and suppress dissenting voices. The critical role of independent journalism in exposing these inconsistencies and advocating for the rights of the Nigerian people cannot be overstated. It is imperative that the media remains vigilant and continues to scrutinize the administration’s actions, ensuring that the truth is brought to light.

Moving Forward: The Need for Accountability

For Nigeria to move forward, there must be a concerted effort to hold Tinubu’s administration accountable for its actions. This includes a thorough investigation into the allocation of funds and the implementation of policies that truly reflect the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people. Civil society organizations, independent media, and concerned citizens must work together to demand transparency and accountability from their leaders.

Conclusion: Back to Sender

In conclusion, Tinubu’s administration has demonstrated a pattern of deception, policy inconsistency, and a blatant disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian people. The suspension of taxes on food items is merely a superficial gesture that fails to address the underlying issues of poverty, hunger, and inequality. The lavish spending on personal comforts, the disproportionate allocation of funds, and the neglect of critical sectors like health and education highlight an administration that is out of touch with reality and driven by self-interest.

It is time for Nigerians to send a clear message to their leaders: back to sender. The people of Nigeria deserve a government that is truly caring, concerned, compassionate, sensitive, knowledgeable, peace-loving, and conscious of the needs of its citizens. Only through collective action and persistent advocacy can the Nigerian people reclaim their rights and ensure a brighter future for all.
