Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has triggered a fresh food-safety debate in Nigeria after revealing that laboratory testing of freshly squeezed orange juice consumed by his wife, Dolapo, reportedly found the drink “not fit for human consumption”.
The disclosure, made during the Open Day for Gardeners’ Annual Seminar in Lagos on 28 August 2026, was not simply a story about one family’s breakfast routine. Osinbajo used the experience to raise a much broader concern: what happens when apparently wholesome food becomes contaminated somewhere between the farm, market and household?
His remarks are particularly significant because they intersect with evidence from Nigerian studies documenting the reported use of calcium carbide and other chemicals by some fruit and vegetable sellers. But an important distinction must be maintained. Osinbajo has not publicly produced the laboratory report in the sources reviewed, nor identified the precise chemical allegedly responsible for the orange juice result. The laboratory finding therefore remains a reported personal account, not independently verified evidence that a particular chemical contaminated his wife’s juice.
That distinction does not make the food-safety problem imaginary. It makes the question more urgent: can Nigerian regulators prove what is actually entering the food chain, where it is happening and who is responsible?
Osinbajo’s alarming household discovery
Speaking at the seminar themed “Leaving The Earth Better Than We Found It”, Osinbajo recalled how his wife had abandoned carbonated drinks and adopted freshly squeezed orange juice as what she believed was a healthier daily alternative.
He said the routine was followed by unexplained headaches.
“After a while, she started having some strange headaches, drinking her fresh juice every day.”
According to Osinbajo, other foods and drinks were considered as possible explanations before a batch of the juice was sent to a laboratory.
“The results came back. It showed that the orange juice, freshly squeezed, was not fit for human consumption.”
He then delivered the line that has helped propel the story across social media:
“She should have just stayed with Coke, right?”
The remark drew laughter at the event, but the underlying message was considerably darker. A food can look natural, be freshly prepared and still be unsafe.
Osinbajo later summarised that warning in language that deserves much wider attention:
“The fact that fruit looks fresh doesn’t mean that it is safe.”
He added that the fact that a drink is natural does not guarantee that nothing harmful has entered the food chain before it reaches the consumer.
The part of Osinbajo’s story that can be independently checked
The former Vice-President linked his personal account to studies examining artificial fruit ripening and chemical preservation in Nigerian markets.
One of the studies is a 2024 peer-reviewed survey in Ado-Ekiti, involving 20 fruit sellers and 357 consumers. Researchers found that 10 of the 20 fruit sellers — 50 per cent — reported using calcium carbide to ripen fruits. The study also found that 90 per cent of the sellers demonstrated poor knowledge of the associated health risks.
That number is striking, but it needs proper context. Twenty sellers is a very small sample, and the researchers did not claim that half of all Nigerian fruit sellers use calcium carbide. The study describes practices among the sellers surveyed in Ado-Ekiti.
An earlier study in Uyo provides another piece of the puzzle. Researchers surveyed 199 fruit sellers in three major markets in the Akwa Ibom State capital between April and June 2021. About 25.1 per cent said they had ever used calcium carbide, while only 8 sellers, or about 4 per cent, identified it as their main ripening method. Natural ripening and polyethylene-bag methods were more commonly reported.
That is an important qualification to the current public debate. The Uyo research supports evidence of calcium-carbide use, but it does not establish that calcium carbide is the dominant method used by fruit sellers.
What happened in Lagos is even more revealing
A 2023 survey of 50 fruit and vegetable retailers across markets in Lagos found that 22 respondents — 44 per cent, not more than half — reported using chemical preservatives, mostly pesticides.
Among those 22 respondents, the study recorded self-reported use of:
- Gammalin-20 by six respondents;
- Sniper by four;
- aluminium phosphide by four;
- DDT by three;
- calcium carbide by three; and
- brodifacoum by two.
This is one of the most important details in the entire story — and one that should not be sensationalised beyond what the evidence shows.
The Lagos researchers did not test every fruit or vegetable in the markets and find those chemicals in them. They surveyed 50 retailers about their practices. The findings are therefore evidence of reported behaviour, not laboratory proof of nationwide contamination.
Even so, the reported substances raise obvious regulatory questions because several are dangerous pesticides or toxic chemicals that are not legitimate substitutes for food preservatives.
NAFDAC’s pesticide framework makes clear that pesticides manufactured, imported, advertised, sold, distributed or used in Nigeria are subject to registration, while its guidance warns that some pesticides are sufficiently toxic that their use must be strictly controlled.
Calcium carbide: why regulators have repeatedly warned about it
Calcium carbide has long attracted scrutiny because it reacts with moisture to produce acetylene, which can accelerate fruit ripening. Scientific reviews have also highlighted concerns over impurities that may occur in commercial-grade calcium carbide, including arsenic and phosphorus compounds.
NAFDAC has previously warned Nigerians against fruits ripened with calcium carbide. In 2023, the agency’s Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, publicly cautioned consumers about the risks associated with such practices.
But there is a critical distinction between the unsafe use of a chemical and proof that any particular orange, mango or banana has been treated with it.
Consumers cannot reliably determine the chemical history of produce by appearance alone.
That is precisely why laboratory surveillance matters.
The science is broader than calcium carbide
The food-safety conversation should not become so focused on calcium carbide that other risks disappear.
Researchers have found evidence of pesticide residues in Nigerian foodstuffs, although the results have not been uniformly alarming.
A University of Lagos-led study published in 2017 analysed 16 food samples from Lagos markets for 13 organochlorine pesticides. Most residues were low and the researchers judged the overall risk from the specific chemicals examined to be limited, although they identified a risk exception involving one compound in fruits for children and called for continued monitoring of other pesticide classes, particularly carbamates and phosphate pesticides.
Another Lagos study found pesticide residues in two commonly eaten vegetables across six markets, with all samples exceeding the study’s cited lower WHO threshold and some samples exceeding its upper comparison level. The authors reported the highest total residue concentration in waterleaf from Oyingbo Market.
The picture, therefore, is not that all Nigerian fruits are poisoned.
The picture is that Nigeria has documented food-safety risks, uneven evidence, fragmented surveillance and a continuing need to identify where unsafe practices occur.
That is a much more serious proposition.
The biggest unanswered question: what exactly was in the Osinbajo family’s juice?
This is where investigative journalism has to resist the temptation to turn an alarming anecdote into an established fact.
Osinbajo said his wife’s orange juice was tested and deemed unfit for consumption. But publicly available reports reviewed by Atlantic Post do not provide the laboratory report, the name of the laboratory, the sample collection protocol, the date of testing, the contaminant identified, its concentration, the applicable maximum residue limit or the laboratory’s analytical method.
Without those details, it is impossible to independently conclude that calcium carbide, pesticide residues or any other named chemical caused the reported result.
It is equally important not to conclude that Dolapo Osinbajo’s headaches were caused by the juice. A laboratory finding that a food is “not fit for human consumption” and a medical diagnosis linking a symptom to that food are two different propositions.
That does not diminish the significance of the warning. It defines what needs to happen next.
NAFDAC already has the regulatory machinery — enforcement is the test
Nigeria is not operating without a legal framework for food and chemical safety.
NAFDAC’s pesticide regulations require covered pesticides to be registered, while its food-safety framework follows the food chain from primary production and sets hygiene requirements intended to ensure food is safe and suitable for consumption.
NAFDAC’s 2024 food-hygiene guidance specifically addresses fruits and vegetables, instructing food handlers to select produce that is intact and fit for human consumption, wash and clean fruits and vegetables appropriately, use hygienic equipment and avoid excessive exposure of prepared food at room temperature.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has also signalled a more science-driven direction for food safety. In 2025, the ministry said the government was scaling up laboratory testing and digital traceability. In June 2026, it said Nigeria had a unified system for foodborne-disease surveillance, laboratory confirmation, outbreak investigation, traceback, food recall and risk communication.
That creates a straightforward public-policy test.
If unsafe food practices are occurring, regulators must be able to detect them, identify the source, seize affected products, trace the supply chain and prosecute deliberate violations.
Otherwise regulations remain words on paper.
The “natural food” trap
One of the strongest aspects of Osinbajo’s intervention is his challenge to a widespread consumer assumption: that “natural” automatically means “safe”.
It does not.
Food safety involves chemical hazards, microbiological contamination, poor handling, dirty equipment, contaminated water, improper storage and misuse of agricultural inputs.
Freshly squeezed juice has risks of its own. International food-safety guidance warns that bacteria present on the outside of fruit can be carried into juice during peeling, cutting or squeezing. NAFDAC itself requires fresh fruits, vegetables and juices to be handled under hygienic conditions.
That means the safety question for a glass of orange juice is not merely “Was it squeezed fresh?”
It is also:
Where did the oranges come from? How were they grown? What chemicals were used? Were they harvested correctly? How were they transported? What water was used? What equipment squeezed them? Who handled them? How long was the juice kept before consumption?
That is the real farm-to-table investigation.
What Nigerians can do while regulators do theirs
Consumers should wash fresh produce thoroughly under running water before eating or processing it. The World Health Organisation notes that washing and peeling can reduce pesticide-residue exposure and also reduce other foodborne hazards, although washing cannot be assumed to remove every chemical contaminant.
Consumers should also be wary of produce sellers making unsubstantiated claims about “chemical-free” food, particularly where there is no traceability or credible certification.
For fresh juice, hygiene matters just as much as the fruit itself.

From one glass of juice to a national food-safety question
Osinbajo’s warning will probably remain controversial because it begins with a personal story rather than a published laboratory investigation.
But that is also why it deserves to be examined, not dismissed.
The studies he cited show that reports of artificial fruit ripening and chemical preservation among some Nigerian traders are not entirely new. The regulatory framework exists. Government has publicly pledged stronger laboratory surveillance and traceability.
The unanswered question is whether those systems are powerful enough to catch dangerous practices before consumers do.
That is the difference between food safety on paper and food safety in the market.
Osinbajo put it bluntly:
“So, this is almost, you know, like an epidemic.”
The evidence available today does not justify describing the entire Nigerian food supply as an epidemic of chemical contamination.
But it does justify a more uncomfortable question:
How many more laboratory surprises are required before Nigeria treats food-safety enforcement with the same seriousness it gives other public-safety threats?
That is the investigation that should now begin.
What is established — and what is not
Established: Nigerian studies have documented reported calcium-carbide use among fruit sellers in Ado-Ekiti and Uyo, while a Lagos survey documented reported use of several chemicals for produce preservation.
Established: NAFDAC regulates pesticides and has food-hygiene and food-safety requirements covering produce and food handling.
Reported by Osinbajo: A laboratory found his wife’s freshly squeezed orange juice “not fit for human consumption”.
Not independently established in the material reviewed: the identity and concentration of any contaminant in that juice; the laboratory’s methodology; or a causal link between the juice and Dolapo Osinbajo’s headaches.
That distinction should remain at the centre of responsible reporting.
