ABUJA, Nigeria โ In a strategic move to bolster security and address pressing needs in Nigeria’s border communities, Dr. Dax George-Kelly Alabo, Executive Secretary of the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), recently held a high-level meeting with the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. The meeting, held in Abuja, aimed to foster collaboration between BCDA and the Ministry of Defence to enhance the welfare and security of border communities across the nation.

Dr. George-Kelly wasted no time in articulating BCDA’s vision and accomplishments since assuming office, underscoring the agency’s commitment to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. With a Strategic Action Plan (SAP) already in place for 2024-2027, BCDA aims to swiftly deliver sustainable impacts, particularly in critical areas such as security and community development.
“Our vision is clear: to reposition BCDA and fulfill its core mandates effectively. We have developed a comprehensive Masterplan for the long-term, emphasizing quick interventions to address pressing needs,” Dr. George-Kelly emphasized during the meeting.
A notable initiative highlighted by Dr. George-Kelly is the ongoing solar-powered water project in Asaa, Ogun State, aimed at improving health and mitigating waterborne diseases in the border community. This project underscores BCDA’s commitment to addressing the immediate needs of border communities while laying the groundwork for long-term sustainable development.
In response, Honourable Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar commended BCDA’s proactive approach and pledged support for the agency’s initiatives. Drawing from his personal background in a border town, the Minister empathized with the challenges faced by these communities and reiterated the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to collaborating with BCDA to address security concerns effectively.
Recognizing the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, Minister Abubakar emphasized the need to engage state Governors, National Assembly members, local government authorities, community leaders, businessmen, and civil society organizations. Their collective involvement, he stressed, is crucial for the successful implementation of BCDA’s Strategic Action Plan and the sustainable development of border communities.
“I commend Dr. George-Kelly for his dedication and proactive approach. BCDA’s initiatives align with our national priorities, and I am confident in the agency’s ability to excel under his leadership,” stated Minister Abubakar, reaffirming the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to supporting BCDA’s efforts.
As BCDA and the Ministry of Defence forge ahead with their collaborative strategy, Nigerians remain hopeful that this partnership will yield tangible results in enhancing security, improving livelihoods, and promoting prosperity in Nigeria’s border communities. Stay tuned as BCDA continues to drive positive change and empowerment at the grassroots level.
