In order to combat the rising epidemic of substance addiction among young people in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have launched a historic partnership. When Youth Development Minister Jamila Bio Ibrahim visited the national offices of the drug law enforcement agency in Abuja, she reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to the partnership.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, emphasised the significant consequences of drug addiction on the youth population and the vital role that collaboration between his organisation and the ministry can play in addressing this problem. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its Renewed Hope Agenda initiatives, which aimed to increase millions of people’s standard of living.
In addition to seeing a decrease in drug addiction, Marwa envisaged collaborations between NDLEA and ministries like Youth Development and Agriculture, as well as the creation of millions of employment and increased food security for the country.
Minister Jamila Bio Ibrahim delineated particular domains of cooperation, such as grassroots consciousness, advocacy, therapy, recovery, and skill development for young people grappling with substance abuse. She expressed optimism about the upcoming launch of the National Youth Development Bank, which aims to empower Nigerian youths. The minister proposed that rehabilitated individuals could access funding through the bank for ventures aligned with the skills acquired during rehabilitation, reducing the likelihood of returning to environments conducive to substance abuse.
This strategic partnership between the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and NDLEA signifies a united front against the menace of substance abuse, with a holistic approach that addresses awareness, rehabilitation, skill-building, and economic empowerment. Atlantic Post will closely monitor developments in this collaborative effort and report on its impact on the fight against substance abuse among Nigerian youths.
Stay tuned for updates on the joint initiatives that aim to secure a brighter and drug-free future for the nation’s youth.
