ABUJA, Nigeria — In a significant diplomatic development, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has lauded the Finnish government’s decisive action in arresting and detaining Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure associated with the Biafran separatist movement. This move underscores Nigeria’s unwavering stance against any actions or rhetoric that threaten its national unity.

During a formal ceremony at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu received the Letter of Credence from Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Sanna Selin. He expressed profound appreciation for Finland’s timely intervention, emphasising that such actions are pivotal in preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity and fostering peaceful coexistence among its diverse populace.

“I must thank you for your record on safeguarding human rights in our country with the trial of Simon Ekpa. Nigeria is indivisible. We have been through turbulent times, and we don’t want to promote terrorism,” President Tinubu asserted.

Simon Ekpa, a dual Finnish-Nigerian citizen born in the 1980s, has been a contentious figure due to his leadership role in a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria to establish an independent Biafra state.

Operating primarily from Finland, Ekpa has been accused of leveraging social media platforms to incite violence and promote divisive narratives that have exacerbated tensions in Nigeria’s southeast region.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detained Ekpa and four other suspects in November 2024 on suspicions of terrorism-related activities. The NBI’s investigation revealed that Ekpa allegedly orchestrated campaigns from Finland that incited violence against civilians and public authorities in southeastern Nigeria.

Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen stated, “The police suspect that the man has furthered his efforts from Finland in such a way that has resulted in violence against civilians

President Tinubu’s commendation of Finland’s actions reflects Nigeria’s broader commitment to maintaining national unity and countering separatist movements. He emphasised the importance of cohesion and cooperation as foundational pillars for the nation’s development.

“I am a child born into activism, but not divisiveness. We need cohesion and cooperation to bring about development. Our watchword is stability and cohesion to move the country forward,” he remarked.

The arrest of Ekpa has significant implications for Nigeria’s internal security dynamics. The southeastern region has been a hotspot for separatist agitations, leading to intermittent clashes between IPOB members and Nigerian security forces.

Ekpa’s influence, particularly through his online presence, has been identified as a catalyst for some of these confrontations. By addressing the external sources of such incitements, Nigeria aims to mitigate the internal unrest that threatens its stability.

Finland’s proactive stance in this matter also highlights the complexities of international law and the responsibilities nations bear in preventing their territories from being used as bases for activities that destabilise other sovereign states.

The Finnish authorities’ collaboration with Nigeria sets a precedent for how countries can work together to address transnational challenges posed by individuals exploiting global platforms to foment discord.

Ambassador Selin acknowledged the strain Ekpa’s activities had placed on bilateral relations and expressed optimism about the renewed cooperation between the two nations.

“Simon Ekpa has been hindering bilateral relations. The cooperation between our two countries is going very well now, and the National Security Adviser has been providing all the evidence,” she noted.

This incident also brings to the fore the challenges nations face in the digital age, where individuals can wield significant influence from afar, impacting the socio-political landscapes of their countries of origin.

The case of Simon Ekpa underscores the need for robust international frameworks to monitor and regulate activities that, while originating in one nation, have far-reaching consequences in another.

Nigeria’s southeast has a tumultuous history marked by the Biafran War (1967-1970), a conflict that resulted in significant loss of life and left deep scars on the nation’s collective psyche. The resurgence of separatist sentiments, spearheaded by figures like Ekpa, threatens to reopen old wounds and destabilise the progress made in national reconciliation.

President Tinubu’s administration has consistently emphasised the importance of national unity and has taken measures to address the root causes of separatist agitations, including economic disparities, political marginalisation, and infrastructural deficits in the southeast.

By collaborating with international partners like Finland to curb external influences that exacerbate these issues, the government aims to create an environment conducive to dialogue and development.

The international community’s response to Finland’s actions has been largely supportive, viewing it as a necessary step in upholding global peace and security. It underscores the principle that while individuals have the right to free expression, this freedom does not extend to incitement of violence or actions that threaten the sovereignty of nations.

In conclusion, the arrest and detention of Simon Ekpa by Finnish authorities, and President Tinubu’s subsequent commendation, mark a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to maintain national unity and address separatist challenges. It highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling transnational threats and reinforces the message that actions undermining a nation’s cohesion will not be tolerated.

As Nigeria navigates these complex dynamics, the government’s commitment to stability, cohesion, and development remains unwavering. The collaboration with Finland serves as a model for how nations can work together to address shared challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.

The path forward will require sustained efforts to address the underlying issues fuelling separatist sentiments, coupled with decisive actions against those who seek to exploit these grievances for personal or political gain.

Through a combination of internal reforms and external partnerships, Nigeria aims to build a future where unity and diversity coexist harmoniously, laying the foundation for lasting peace and prosperity.

In the broader context, this development serves as a reminder of the delicate balance nations must maintain between safeguarding individual freedoms and ensuring collective security. It underscores the need for vigilance in the face of emerging threats and the importance of international solidarity in upholding the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.

While the move to detain Simon Ekpa has been celebrated by many within Nigeria, it has also drawn mixed reactions among the diaspora, particularly those sympathetic to the Biafran cause. Proponents of the separatist agenda argue that Ekpa’s actions were aimed at highlighting the marginalisation of the southeast, but critics maintain that his methods only fuelled violence and division.

The Nigerian government has vowed to continue working with international partners to ensure that individuals who promote unrest are held accountable, no matter where they operate from. This bold stance underscores Nigeria’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and prevent the re-emergence of violent separatist tendencies.

The arrest also serves as a wake-up call for nations hosting individuals who exploit their platforms to destabilise other countries. By taking a firm stance, Finland has set an example for how the international community can cooperate to combat extremism and cyber incitement.
