PORT HARCOURT, Rivers State โ€” The political landscape in Rivers State, Nigeria, is fraught with tension as the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, orders the continuous barricade of all local government secretariats amidst an escalating political crisis. This development comes as a precautionary measure to prevent further violence and maintain law and order in the region.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, orders the continuous barricade of all Rivers State local government secretariats amidst an escalating political crisis. Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Continuous Barricade Ordered by IG

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Thursday in Abuja that police officers would remain stationed at all local government secretariats in Rivers State until a court judgment is reached regarding the controversy over the tenure of local government council chairmen. Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a meeting with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers, Egbetokun emphasized that the police presence is aimed at ensuring peace and order, not intimidation.

โ€œYou are all aware that in what happened two-three days ago, we lost a police inspector. We are sad about that. We donโ€™t want to lose more men. We donโ€™t want to lose more Nigerians. We donโ€™t want to lose more citizens of Rivers State. So we have a duty to prevent the breakdown of law and order,โ€ Egbetokun stated.

He assured that the barricade would be lifted as soon as the court makes its pronouncement on the matter.

Political Tensions and Recent Violence

The recent escalation in Rivers State saw a violent clash between supporters of the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and those of his predecessor, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, at Eberi-Omuma in the Omuma Local Government Area. This confrontation resulted in the tragic death of a police inspector and a member of a local security outfit, highlighting the dangerous level of political friction in the state.

The state Commissioner for Police, Olatunji Disu, announced that the LG council headquarters would remain shut to prevent further bloodshed and chaos. โ€œThe LG council headquarters will remain closed for the time being due to the clash between the feuding parties,โ€ Disu stated.

Caretaker Committee Chairmen Take Over

Amidst this turmoil, the Caretaker Committee Chairmen for the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State have assumed their duties. These newly appointed chairmen were sworn in by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who urged them to promote peace and work effectively despite the ongoing barricades.

In a symbolic move, Evans Bipi, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ogu/Bolo LGA, swore in his members adjacent to the council secretariat. Bipi outlined his administrationโ€™s focus on human capital development, economic empowerment, and employment generation. He emphasized the importance of addressing hunger and poverty through what he termed “stomach infrastructure.”

โ€œThere will be human capital development, we will support women and men doing business because infrastructure without food in your stomach is zero,โ€ Bipi declared.

Economic and Social Initiatives

Bipi, along with other Caretaker Committee Chairmen, has dissolved all standing committees and task forces set up by their predecessors. This move is part of a broader effort to restructure the local government administrations and address pressing economic and social issues.

In Eleme LGA, the CTC Chairman, Brain Gokpa, prioritized security and promised to include all stakeholders in the governance process. Gokpa condemned the destruction of property by hoodlums and announced the dissolution of various youth councils and standing committees.

โ€œMany people have expressed fears that nobody can control Brain (himself). Brain is not a stupid person; he is a politician who knows that collectively we can achieve our aim because I know I cannot do it alone. We will carry our stakeholders and everybody along,โ€ Gokpa assured.

Similarly, in Khana LGA, CTC Chairman Marvin Yorbana pledged to run an inclusive government focused on empowering young people, the elderly, and women. Yorbana emphasized collaboration and the immediate execution of Governor Fubaraโ€™s directive to pay outstanding salaries to workers.

Preventive Measures and Commitment to Peace

The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to taking preemptive measures to forestall any escalation of violence in Rivers State. Egbetokunโ€™s orders for continuous barricade and the strong police presence at local government secretariats are part of these efforts. The Inspector General highlighted the tragic loss of a police inspector as a somber reminder of the stakes involved and the need for preventive actions to protect lives and maintain order.

Political Implications and Future Prospects

The ongoing political crisis in Rivers State has significant implications for the stateโ€™s stability and governance. The clash between supporters of Governor Fubara and those of his predecessor, Wike, underscores deep-seated political rivalries that could destabilize the region if not carefully managed.

Governor Fubaraโ€™s appointment of Caretaker Committee Chairmen and their swift actions to dissolve existing structures and address local issues reflect an attempt to reassert control and stabilize the local governments. However, the continuous police barricade and the pending court judgment add layers of uncertainty to the political environment.

The Federal Governmentโ€™s role in mediating and ensuring that the rule of law prevails will be crucial in the coming weeks. The outcome of the court judgment on the tenure of local government council chairmen will significantly influence the political dynamics and the potential for either resolution or further conflict.

Conclusion

Rivers State stands at a critical juncture as political tensions threaten to escalate into broader unrest. The continuous police barricade of local government secretariats, coupled with the appointment of Caretaker Committee Chairmen, reflects both the volatile nature of the current political climate and the urgent need for stability.

The commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining order and the proactive measures taken by the new local government leaders are steps towards averting further violence. However, the underlying political rivalries and the pending court decision remain pivotal factors that will shape the future of Rivers State.

As the state navigates this period of uncertainty, the actions of political leaders, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary will be critical in determining whether peace and stability can be restored or if the region will continue to grapple with conflict and disorder.
