Artificial intelligence is moving from the conference room to the Nigerian workplace.

A customer-service officer can now use AI to draft replies in seconds. A marketer can generate campaign ideas, analyse customer data and produce content before lunch. An accountant can automate repetitive spreadsheet work. A software developer can use AI to write, test and explain code.

The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will affect Nigerian jobs.

It is how deeply it will change them — and who will benefit.

For workers, the biggest mistake may be to think only in terms of jobs disappearing. AI is increasingly changing the tasks inside jobs, raising expectations about productivity and shifting the skills employers value.

That could create new opportunities for Nigerians who learn to work with AI. It could also squeeze workers whose jobs depend heavily on repetitive digital tasks.

The transformation has already begun.

Nigerian employers are preparing for an AI workplace

The evidence from Nigerian businesses points to a gradual but significant shift.

PwC’s 2026 Nigerian CEO Survey found that Nigerian companies are increasingly focused on technology, data and AI as part of their reinvention strategies. About one-quarter of CEOs said their businesses were already applying AI extensively in customer-facing activities such as sales and service and in products and services.

But the picture is uneven. Only 9 per cent said AI was being applied at scale to strategic decision-making.

That gap matters.

It suggests that many Nigerian companies are experimenting with AI without yet rebuilding their businesses around it. The next phase could therefore be less about buying an AI tool and more about changing how work gets done.

PwC’s earlier Nigerian CEO research was even more direct. Seventy-two per cent of Nigerian CEOs said they expected AI to transform workforce and skills strategies, while 81 per cent anticipated AI becoming integrated into business processes and workflows over the following three years.

That points to a future in which AI becomes part of ordinary work rather than a specialist technology used only by technology companies.

AI is more likely to change tasks than erase entire professions

The global evidence gives Nigeria an important warning against both panic and complacency.

The International Labour Organisation’s 2025 assessment found that one in four workers globally is in an occupation with some exposure to generative AI. But the ILO concluded that transformation is more likely than outright replacement because most occupations still contain tasks requiring human involvement.

That distinction is crucial.

A journalist may use AI to transcribe an interview, summarise documents or generate research leads. The journalist still has to decide what is true, what matters, who should be interviewed and what can responsibly be published.

A lawyer may use AI to review documents faster. A doctor may use it to support analysis. A financial analyst may automate parts of a report.

The job survives, but the job description changes.

In some cases, the number of people needed to perform certain tasks may fall. In others, workers who become more productive with AI may become more valuable.

That is why the coming competition may not simply be between workers and machines.

It may be between workers who use AI effectively and workers who do not.

Routine office work faces the biggest pressure

The first major pressure point is likely to be repetitive knowledge work.

Administrative assistants, data-entry workers, basic customer-support staff, junior content producers, routine bookkeeping roles and some forms of transcription are built around tasks that software can increasingly perform.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that 39 per cent of workers’ existing core skills could change by 2030. It expects technology-related abilities such as AI and big data to be among the fastest-growing areas of demand, while skills such as creative thinking, resilience, flexibility and leadership remain important.

The implication for Nigeria is significant because businesses under cost pressure have a strong incentive to automate repetitive work.

For a company battling rising wages, electricity costs, logistics expenses and other operating pressures, an AI system that can reduce hours spent on repetitive tasks can look like an attractive investment.

But that does not automatically mean mass redundancies.

The more likely first step is smaller teams producing more output.

One employee may do the work that previously required two or three people.

That could improve productivity and wages for highly capable workers while making entry-level opportunities harder to secure.

The entry-level job problem could become more serious

This may be one of the least discussed consequences of AI in Nigeria.

Many young workers begin their careers by doing routine tasks. They learn how an organisation works while handling basic research, reports, customer enquiries, documentation and administrative jobs.

AI can now perform part of that work.

PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer found that AI-exposed entry-level roles are increasingly demanding skills traditionally associated with more experienced workers, including judgement and leadership. In its US analysis, such entry-level roles were seven times more likely to require those traditionally senior skills.

That creates a difficult question for Nigeria.

If companies automate the routine work that once gave graduates their first experience, where will young workers acquire that experience?

The answer will have to involve more apprenticeships, structured training, practical projects and work-integrated learning.

A degree alone will not be enough.

AI will create jobs too

It would be wrong to frame the story entirely as one of job destruction.

The World Economic Forum expects AI and information-processing technologies to create millions of roles globally even as they displace others. Across all major labour-market changes, its 2025 report projected 170 million new roles and 92 million displaced roles by 2030, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs.

The emerging jobs are not limited to machine-learning engineers.

Demand is expanding around data, cybersecurity, software development, cloud systems, AI implementation, digital product management, automation, compliance, risk and technology-enabled business operations.

There is also another opportunity for Nigeria: using AI to create businesses rather than simply using AI inside existing jobs.

A Nigerian entrepreneur can build an AI-enabled customer-service operation, education platform, agricultural service, financial tool, media business or logistics product without needing the size of workforce once required.

That could be particularly valuable in a country with a large young population and a growing digital economy.

Nigeria is trying to build the workforce for that future

The Federal Government’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy recognises that talent will be one of the decisive factors in determining whether Nigeria benefits from AI.

The strategy sets a goal of equipping at least 70 per cent of Nigeria’s young workforce aged 16 to 35 with AI-related skills and knowledge. It also identifies technical skills alongside areas such as business models, communications, innovation management, interaction design, legal expertise and change management.

That is an important point.

Nigeria does not only need people who can build AI models.

It needs people who understand how AI can solve Nigerian business problems.

The country’s 3 Million Technical Talent programme already includes AI and machine learning among its priority technical skills, alongside software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, cloud computing and other digital disciplines.

The National AI Strategy also cites an IFC projection that by 2030, about 28 million jobs in Nigeria will require digital skills, with a potential market value of $130 billion.

That figure should not be confused with jobs that will all be AI jobs.

It points instead to a broader shift in the labour market: digital capability is becoming a basic economic advantage.

The AI opportunity extends beyond Lagos offices

One danger in discussions about AI is treating employment as though every Nigerian worker sits in a corporate office.

Nigeria’s labour market is overwhelmingly informal.

The National Bureau of Statistics reported about 92.7 million people in informal employment in Q1 2024. Informality was estimated at 92.7 per cent nationally, with an even higher rate in rural areas.

That means AI could eventually affect traders, farmers, artisans, transport operators, small retailers and micro-business owners too.

For a small fashion business, AI can help produce advertisements and respond to customers.

For a farmer, digital systems can assist with market intelligence and agricultural information.

For a trader, AI can help track stock and analyse sales.

For a small media business, AI can reduce the cost of transcription, research, editing and production.

The future of AI in Nigeria may therefore be less about robots replacing workers and more about inexpensive digital tools increasing what one person can accomplish.

The skills that could become more valuable

The strongest workers in the AI economy will not necessarily be the people who know the most technical jargon.

They will be the people who can combine technology with something else.

A lawyer who understands AI.

An accountant who can automate reporting and still interpret financial risk.

A journalist who can use AI for research but verify every critical fact.

A marketer who can use AI to increase output while understanding customers.

A salesperson who can analyse data but still close a human relationship.

A software developer who can use AI to move faster without surrendering quality control.

PwC’s 2026 global research found that jobs requiring specific AI skills were growing much faster than the overall jobs market, while AI-exposed roles were placing increasing value on judgement, creativity and leadership. The report also found a growing wage premium for workers with AI skills.

LinkedIn has similarly identified AI literacy as a rapidly growing skill, alongside adaptability, strategic thinking and communication.

The message is straightforward.

Learning how to use AI is becoming useful in almost every profession.

But there is a danger of a two-speed workforce

AI could widen Nigeria’s economic divide if access to the technology follows existing inequalities.

Workers with reliable electricity, fast internet, modern devices, training and employers willing to invest in digital tools will be able to exploit AI faster.

Workers without those advantages may be left behind.

The same problem applies to businesses.

Large banks, telecommunications companies, professional-services firms and technology companies can afford specialised systems, secure data infrastructure and training.

A small business may rely on a free chatbot from a mobile phone.

That is still useful, but the productivity gap between the two businesses can become enormous.

Nigeria’s own AI strategy recognises infrastructure, talent, data governance and responsible deployment as critical conditions for success.

The real fight is over productivity

There is a more optimistic way to look at the transformation.

Nigeria does not need AI merely to reduce headcount.

It needs AI to increase output.

That difference is enormous.

A young entrepreneur who can run a five-person digital company with AI tools may be able to compete internationally.

A Nigerian freelancer who can produce better work faster may earn from foreign clients.

A small company that automates routine administration may have more money to invest in sales, new products and employees.

PwC’s 2026 global research found that companies most able to use AI were recording stronger productivity, headcount and wage growth than less AI-exposed companies. That suggests AI can support expansion rather than simply cutting labour.

The challenge is making sure Nigerian workers are ready to capture that upside.

What Nigerian workers should do now

The safest strategy is not to chase every new AI application.

It is to become exceptionally good at one valuable field and then learn how AI can make that expertise more productive.

Workers should understand the fundamentals of generative AI, learn how to verify AI output, become comfortable with data and automation, and strengthen the human skills machines still struggle to reproduce.

Employers have responsibilities too.

Training should not be treated as a luxury for senior staff. Companies need to rethink job descriptions, redesign workflows and teach employees how to use AI safely and productively.

Government has an even larger role in ensuring that digital infrastructure, electricity, broadband, education and skills programmes keep pace with technological change.

The prize is substantial.

Nigeria has one of the world’s youngest populations and a growing pool of digitally minded workers. Its National AI Strategy is explicitly trying to turn that demographic strength into an AI and digital workforce.

The jobs are changing. The race is already on.

The biggest mistake Nigeria could make would be to wait for AI’s impact to become obvious before responding.

By then, the most valuable skills may already have shifted.

The evidence so far does not support the simplistic claim that AI will destroy all jobs. It points towards something more disruptive and more complicated: jobs are being redesigned, routine tasks are being automated, productivity expectations are rising and new skills are attracting a premium.

For Nigerian workers, that creates a clear choice.

Fight the technology.

Or learn to use it better than the competition.

The future of work in Nigeria may belong neither to humans nor machines alone.

It may belong to the human being who knows how to make the machine work.
