The Federal Government has dismissed claims by Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, that he is being targeted by the administration, describing the allegations as misleading and without basis.

In a strongly worded response, the government said Obi’s recent comments, including his account of an incident involving his car at the airport, were an attempt to turn a routine personal inconvenience into a political matter.

According to the statement, the former Anambra State governor’s claim that the airport car incident amounted to government harassment was unfounded. It suggested that any issue may have arisen from a breach of parking regulations rather than any deliberate targeting by state officials.

The statement also rejected Obi’s suggestion that he may not be alive for the January 2027 election, as well as his allegation that people are being pressured not to invite him to social events. It described both assertions as fabricated narratives designed to attract sympathy and divert attention from what it called his credibility problems.

It further accused Obi of repeatedly making unverified allegations against the government, saying he often “resorts to exaggeration and baseless allegations” whenever he encounters personal difficulties.

The response also referred to Obi’s reported stake in Fidelity Bank, insisting that the institution was not under government pressure. Instead, it said the bank continued to perform well under the current administration’s economic reforms.

“The government is certainly not targeting the bank,” the statement said. “Rather than being ‘haunted’ by the government, Mr Obi appears to be grappling with the consequences of his litany of unfounded statements.”

The statement added that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained focused on its reform agenda and would not be distracted by Obi’s remarks or political ambitions.

“The Tinubu government remains fully focused on consolidating its historic and beneficial reforms for the good of all Nigerians,” it said. “It has neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by Mr Obi’s self-serving narratives and lies or by his candidacy.”

Obi has not publicly responded to the latest statement at the time of filing.

The exchange adds to the continuing political tension between Obi and supporters of the Tinubu administration, with both sides frequently trading accusations over governance, public conduct and the direction of national reforms.
