During his World Sick Day activities, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, made a noteworthy commitment to the advancement of healthcare by announcing a generous donation of N20 million. The money is intended to help health workersโ€”especially nursesโ€”with their training.

Peter Obi Commits N20 Million to Health Worker Training on World Sick Day. February 14, 2024.

When Obi visited the College of Nursing Sciences at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, he gave the donation. Despite World Sick Day falling on Sunday, February 11, Obi delayed his comments out of respect for the AFCON Finals and the recent passing of his dear friends, Herbert Wigwe and Abimbola Ogunbajo.

Declaring his commitment to health worker education and the industry’s general expansion, Obi emphasised the need of a strong healthcare system as a critical indicator of society advancement. He stressed that throughout his time as Anambra State governor, he has consistently supported the College of Nursing, Ihiala.

Praiseing the College for its efforts in educating more than a thousand students in medical lab science, nursing, and midwifery, Obi also expressed gratitude to the owner, management, and staff for their unwavering commitment.

During his visit, Obi took the opportunity to address the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), urging them to reconsider stringent measures hindering nurses’ verifications for migration. He emphasized the importance of investing in more training institutions for healthcare professionals and supporting their global opportunities. Obi asserted that facilitating nurses’ access to global opportunities not only provides international exposure but also generates substantial foreign remittances, potentially surpassing the nation’s oil revenue.

Obi pleaded vehemently that the NMCN immediately undo these actions for the good of Nigerian nurses and the country at large. His support of international prospects and improved healthcare training is indicative of his dedication to developing a strong and competitive healthcare industry worldwide.

Peter Obi’s recent donation demonstrates his steadfast dedication to the growth of healthcare and the welfare of Nigerian health workers, as he continues to advocate issues that have an impact on the country’s progress. Watch this space for more information about his powerful projects.
