The 10th Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker Martin Amaewhule extends the frontiers of legislative activism, Martins Wachukwu writes.

The 10th Rivers State House of Assembly has proven to be a beacon of hope with people-centred legislations enacted under the dynamic speakership of Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State (DSSRS). Despite daunting challenges the House has remained unperturbed, prioritising legislative excellence and unwavering commitment to the service of Rivers State people.

The Rt. the Hon. Martin Amaewhule has displayed the skill of an experienced captain in navigating the ship of the Assembly in turbulent waters; ensuring that the Assembly’s focus remains on delivering legislations that positively impact on the lives of Rivers people. The Rt. Hon. Amaewhule achieved this feat through transparent and inclusive leadership panache, and more importantly through his profound knowledge of the legislative process, which has endeared him to his Colleagues and the discernible public.

It is a notorious fact that the journey of the 10th Assembly has been riddled with avoidable hurdles, yet,
the House has surmounted all brazen attacks on it, including the burning down of its hallowed Chamber. Interestingly, those who orchestrated and masterminded the attempts at derailing the House from performing its constitutional and pristine functions appear disappointed by the exceptional performance, the resilience and doggedness of the irrepressible 27 honourable Members of the House.

More impressive is the unity and resolve of these soldiers of democracy, sworn to serve their people despite the harassments and intimidations from the execution quarters. This speaks volumes of their anchorage on the public good theory as against the protection of an individual interest. By their actions, these honourable Members have reaffirmed the Legislature as a critical arm of government that champions the will and aspirations of the citizens.

Among the commendable achievements of the 10th Assembly is its dedication to initiating and passing Bills that directly address the needs of the people. From the economic development Bills as evidenced in the Rivers State Electricity Market Bill awaiting assent, to the amended Public Procurement Law and others, the Assembly has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fostering progress across all sectors.

Happily, the unwavering dedication of the 10th Assembly has not gone unnoticed across the State, as Rivers people have expressed their admiration and support for the superlative leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule; and the unflinching commitment of the Members to their Legislative duties, as they act and work with unanimity of purpose in extending the frontiers of Legislative activism. It is an incontrovertible fact that their ability to rise above distractions and deliver on their mandate has attracted widespread respect and envy.

As the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly under the speakership of the Rt. the Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule continues its legislative journey, the expectation remains high for more people-focused and oriented legislations, as the Speaker, officers and Members have set a standard for Legislative activism, excellence and dedication to constitutional roles that will undoubtedly serve as a model for future lawmakers, not only in Rivers State but Nigeria.
