OBITUARY | ATLANTIC POST | BUSINESS & SOCIETY

The late Chief Samuel Onomeruoja Oreziferuo Oniko, a banking pioneer, traditional leader and patriarch of the Oniko Dynasty, will be honoured at funeral ceremonies in Irri, Delta State, from 30 October to 1 November 2026.

Irri Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State will gather to celebrate the life and legacy of Chief Samuel Onomeruoja Oreziferuo Oniko, the revered Osogba of Irri Kingdom, whose influence extended across banking, traditional leadership, family life and community development.

The patriarch of the Oniko Dynasty died on 2 May 2026 at the African Medical Centre of Excellence in Abuja after a brief illness, according to a family announcement.

His death marked the end of a life that combined professional achievement with traditional responsibilities and a longstanding place in the affairs of Irri Kingdom.

Announcing his passing, the Oniko Dynasty described the late chief as the family’s beloved Osogba, Odio, brother, uncle, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The announcement portrayed him as a man whose legacy reached beyond his family and into the wider community, describing him as the “Architect of the Modern Irri Kingdom Development Plan” and “a Financial Guru and Banker of Repute in Nigeria”.

A distinguished career in banking

Chief Samuel Oniko’s professional legacy forms an important part of his public identity.

A November 2025 profile published by THISDAY identified him as the pioneer Managing Director of the now-defunct Oceanic Bank, connecting his name with an earlier chapter in Nigeria’s banking history.

His career in finance and his traditional responsibilities reflected two different dimensions of public service: participation in the financial sector and leadership within his ancestral community.

For the Oniko family, his passing is therefore both a personal loss and the departure of a patriarch whose experience, standing and counsel helped shape the family’s place in the community.

His legacy also provides a bridge between generations. His son, Sir Daniel Odoviano Oniko, is a Nigerian financial executive and entrepreneur who leads PAROFUND Multipurpose Cooperative and APICES Finance Company Limited.

The younger Oniko’s career in financial services forms part of the family’s continuing presence in Nigeria’s business and economic landscape.

Yet the significance of the elder Oniko’s life extends beyond the professional achievements associated with his name. It includes the responsibilities of preserving family heritage, sustaining relationships and contributing to the development of his community.

A traditional leader remembered in Irri

As Osogba of Irri Kingdom, Chief Samuel Oniko occupied a recognised place in the kingdom’s traditional structure.

The family announcement placed particular emphasis on his leadership, wisdom and contributions to the kingdom, reflecting the esteem in which his relatives and community associates held him.

It stated: “His leadership, wisdom, and contributions to Irri Kingdom were of the highest order. He will be greatly missed by all.”

That tribute captures the central message of the announcement: the loss of a man remembered not only for his titles and professional accomplishments, but also for his place within a wider community.

Traditional institutions continue to play important roles in community identity, the preservation of customs and the transmission of cultural heritage. The passing of a senior figure consequently carries significance beyond the immediate family, particularly when the person has been associated with community development and the stewardship of family traditions.

For Irri Kingdom, the coming funeral ceremonies will provide an opportunity for relatives, traditional leaders, friends and well-wishers to pay their respects and reflect on the late chief’s life.

Funeral programme: 30 October to 1 November 2026

The Oniko Dynasty has scheduled three days of activities to celebrate the life of the late Osogba.

The programme begins at 5pm at his residence in PARO Farms Estate, Km 1, Idheze Road, Irri Town.

The funeral service will hold at 11am at Omo-Ode Primary School Field Ground, Irri Town, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State.

Interment is scheduled for noon at his compound in PARO Farms Estate, Idheze Road, Irri Town. A reception will follow immediately at Omo-Ode Primary School Field Ground.

Sunday, 1 November 2026 — Outing Service

The outing service will take place at 8am at St Gabriel Anglican Church, Irri, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State.

Chief (Sir) Daniel O. Oniko, Ogba of Irri Kingdom, made the announcement on behalf of the Oniko Dynasty.

A family prepares to say goodbye

Behind the titles of Osogba and Odio is the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

For his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the ceremonies represent an opportunity to honour a loved one whose life spanned generations and whose memory will remain part of the family’s history.

For the wider Irri community, they will mark a moment to recognise his traditional standing and professional contribution.

Chief Samuel Oniko’s life is remembered through several legacies: his banking career, his position within the Oniko Dynasty, his traditional title and the community development role attributed to him by his family.

As mourners gather in Irri from 30 October, the message from the family is one of gratitude, remembrance and honour for a life it believes was devoted to service, wisdom and legacy.
