Opinion | Governor Wike: The golden performer and the many recognitions

By Ugochukwu Oputa

Governor Wike like most other Governors began his first term in office in 2015. But unlike some of his colleagues, he was met with a long legal tussle of defending his mandate; one that dragged up to the Supreme Court. And after the victory at the Supreme Court, 2016 came with the election reruns and yet another round of political tussle.

However, even with the numerous challenges and distractions faced in the early part of his first tenure, Governor Wike excelled exceedingly so much that the year 2017 was a year known as the harvest of awards.

In 2017, the Rivers State Governor bagged a whopping number of 9 National and international awards with many other recognitions across the country.

In the year 2017 the Governor won the following awards;

  • Authority Newspaper Man of the Year Award
  • Independent Newspapers Man of the Year Award
  • Global Human Settlements Outstanding Contribution Award.
  • New Telegraph Man of the Year Award
  • Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year Award
  • Silverbird Man of the Year Award
  • New Telegraph Man of the Year Award
  • Independent News Paper Political Icon of The Year

To prove that his awards and recognitions were not by a sting of luck or sentiments, in the year 2018, the Governor bagged yet more awards while winning back to back both the Silverbird Man of the Year Award & Sun Governor of the Year Award and also bagging the coveted AIPS Power of Sports (POS) Award.

Some of his awards in 2018 are as follows:

  • Silverbird Man of the Year Award
  • Zik Prize for Good Governance Award
  • Leadership Newspaper Award
  • Sun Man of the year Award
  • Business Day Governor of the Year Award
  • International Sports Press Association-Africa (AIPS) Africa Power of Sports (POS) Award in Brussels, Belgium.

The Year 2019 was not left out as even as an Election Year, the Governor was presented with the DAAR Governor of the Year Award and also won the Prestigious International Badminton Confederation of Africa Award for Distinguished Service to Sports in Africa.

The year 2020 saw the country and the world at large battling with the COVID-19 Pandemic. But even at that, Rivers State witnessed massive infrastructural development as work kept on going even when nations across the world were shut down.

In same year, the Governor received the prestigious Business Hallmark Man of The Year Award.

With the year 2021 yet to come to an end, the Governor have already bagged a couple high ranking awards with the SUN MAN OF THE YEAR Award being the most recent which was presented to him over the weekend.

Below are some of the awards won so far;

  • Blue Print Governor of the Year Award
  • Leadership Best Governor of the Year Award
  • Silverbird Extraordinary Personality of the Year “2020”
  • Sun Man of the Year

In Presenting the SUN MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD to Governor Wike ably represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalli Banigo, Former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu made this memorable Statement;

“I am a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the truth must be told that Governor Wike is doing well.”

“I have taken official and unguided tours of projects up to Opobo Town. It is quite amazing that Governor Wike is doing so much.”

With the prevailing realities, one can easily say that Governor Wike is the most decorated political leader in the country in this current dispensation; more so, with Physical and visible evidence to show. The Developmental strides in Rivers State is one that have been acknowledged beyond partizan lines hence the numerous awards and recognitions is but a confirmation of an obvious fact.

Governor Wike have done well and truly deserves all the accolades.
