IKOYI, Lagos โ€” The broadcasting behemoth MultiChoice has announced yet another round of price hikes on its DStv and GOtv bundles, marking the third raise in as many years, a decision that has outraged Nigerian consumers. The decision, which will go into effect on May 1, 2024, has left subscribers struggling to keep up with the rising cost of pay-TV.

MultiChoice Faces Backlash Over Steep Price Hikes on DStv and GOtv Packages

With the most recent change, there are significant increases on all fronts. For example, the DStv Premium bundle now costs N37,000 instead of N29,500, a startling 25% more. Similarly, the Compact package saw a significant increase from N12,500 to N15,700, and the DStv Compact+ subscription skyrocketed from N19,800 to N25,000.

Regarding GOtv, customers are not exempt from the impact of the price increase. The Supa package has increased significantly from N7,600 to N9,600, and the Supa+ package has increased significantly from N12,500 to N15,700. Even the more affordable Max bundle has seen a price increase, going from N5,700 to N7,200.

These steep price increases follow two prior price increases by MultiChoice, which included a 20% increase in all of its packages in December 2023 and a 17% increase in April of the same year. Many subscribers are feeling disillusioned and squeezed financially as a result of the ongoing trend of price increases, particularly in light of MultiChoice’s estimated $72 million loss in the third quarter of the previous year.

In an attempt to defend the most recent round of price increases, MultiChoice stated that rising operational expenses and inflationary pressures were the main reasons behind the choice. Subscribers, however, are still dubious, wondering why there has been a series of rises in the face of uncertain economic conditions and declining purchasing power.

Concerns have also been made about the timing of MultiChoice’s price increases, because the business implemented the most recent changes only four months after the prior increase. Many subscribers are reeling from the quick sequence of price increases, finding it difficult to balance rising pay-TV costs with stagnant salaries and growing financial difficulties.

In response to the criticism, MultiChoice acknowledged the financial burden on members while restating its commitment to offering top-notch entertainment. Critics counter that the company’s unrelenting quest of profit maximisation worsens the situation for already financially challenged households by sacrificing consumer welfare.

The recent announcement of an additional round of price hikes has sparked demands for consumer protection and regulatory action to stop what is regarded to be pay-TV providers’ exploitation. As subscribers become more outspoken about their dissatisfaction, MultiChoice is under intense public scrutiny and is under increasing pressure to fix the affordability crisis that is ailing Nigeria’s pay-TV market.

The predicament of Nigerian consumers remains unresolved as the argument continues, as they are torn between the temptation of high-end entertainment and the hard reality of rising subscription fees. In an increasingly cutthroat and competitive industry, MultiChoice finds itself at a critical crossroads in its attempt to strike a balance between profitability and customer pleasure due to the heavy scrutiny surrounding its pricing practices.

MultiChoice’s decision to impose yet another round of price hikes on its DStv and GOtv packages has caused controversy and unhappiness among customers in a daring move that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s pay-TV market. The future of Nigeria’s pay-TV sector is in jeopardy as the corporation struggles with growing criticism and public uproar, caught between the competing demands of maximising profits and ensuring the welfare of consumers.
