The Lagos State Government has clarified the legality of speed limits, reinforcing enforcement measures based on the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law. The Commissioner for Transportation emphasised standardised traffic signs and warned against misinformation, highlighting the operational speed cameras aimed at enhancing road safety.

Lagos, Nigeria – In a bold reaffirmation of its commitment to road safety, the Lagos State Government (LASG) has issued a stern clarification on the legality of speed limits, igniting a fresh debate on traffic regulation across the megacity.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, declared that the enforcement measures are firmly anchored in law, citing Section 28(2)(a) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018) as the foundation for penalising motorists who flout the set limits.

Mr Osiyemi emphasised that the Ministry of Transportation is the sole authority responsible for the standardisation of traffic signs in Lagos, ensuring that the design and placement of these vital markers adhere to global best practices.

He warned against the proliferation of misleading rumours, asserting that the newly installed speed cameras – products of meticulous studies – are operational solely on predetermined axes to enhance commuter safety.

Furthermore, the Commissioner hinted at future expansions of the system to cover additional high-risk areas following comprehensive reviews.

This decisive move has drawn both support and criticism from various quarters. As Lagos continues its relentless drive towards a safer, more efficient transport network, motorists are urged to comply with these regulations and consult official LASG channels for verified updates and information.
