ABUJA, Nigeria โ In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigerian House of Representatives has launched a probe into Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the representative for Ideato federal constituency of Imo state, following his contentious visit to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This move has sparked a heated debate within the legislative chamber, revealing deep-seated political tensions and power struggles.

A Solidarity Visit Turns Controversial
The controversy erupted during Thursdayโs plenary session when Ugochinyere was referred to the Houseโs Committee on Ethics and Privileges. The referral came after Yusuf Gagdi, a lawmaker from Plateau, raised a “point of privilege” concerning Ugochinyereโs recent activities.
Last month, Ugochinyere led over 50 House members to Port Harcourt to celebrate Fubaraโs first year in office anniversary and thanksgiving service. Ugochinyere, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member and outspoken supporter of Fubara, portrays himself as the spokesperson for 60 opposition lawmakers. His public criticism of Umar Damagum, the PDP’s acting national chairman, and Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has already stirred the political waters.
The Point of Privilege: Misrepresentation Allegations
Yusuf Gagdiโs “point of privilege” centered on Ugochinyereโs alleged misrepresentation of the visit. Gagdi claimed Ugochinyereโs press statement post-visit falsely suggested that the lawmakers represented the entire House of Representatives. According to Gagdi, the legislators were actually in Rivers State for an oversight function related to local content, and their visit to Fubara was incidental.
โOne of our colleagues issued a press statement that the delegation was in River state for a solidarity visit to the governor,โ Gagdi said. โIt is okay to do a solidarity visit, but not for members to be misrepresented. I urge the house to look for this publication and interact with Ikenga.โ
Internal Dissent: A House Divided
Gagdiโs move to refer Ugochinyere to the Ethics Committee was met with resistance. Some lawmakers who accompanied Ugochinyere to Rivers State attempted to challenge Gagdiโs point of order but were overruled by Ben Kalu, the deputy speaker presiding over the session. Kalu’s decision to not allow debate on the point of privilege sparked loud protests from the floor, highlighting the division among the lawmakers.
Mark Esset from Akwa Ibom downplayed the significance of the issue. โIn my opinion, I donโt see anything here. The same paper publication said some members of the house. There is nothing here. There is freedom of association,โ Esset remarked before being ruled out of order by Kalu.
Political Underpinnings: The Bigger Picture
This incident is more than a procedural dispute; it exposes the intricate political dynamics within the PDP and the House of Representatives. Ugochinyereโs vocal support for Fubara and his criticisms of key PDP figures, Damagum and Wike, are seen as part of a broader struggle for control and influence within the party.
Fubara and Wike are engaged in a bitter rivalry over the control of Rivers State’s political machinery. Ugochinyere’s alignment with Fubara positions him against Wike, a powerful figure in the PDP and a former governor of Rivers State. This rivalry has significant implications for the PDP’s unity and future strategies, especially with national elections on the horizon.
Ethics Committee’s Role: What Next?
The Committee on Ethics and Privileges is now tasked with investigating Ugochinyereโs actions. This committee, responsible for maintaining the ethical standards of the House, will examine whether Ugochinyereโs statements and actions constituted a breach of privilege or ethical misconduct. The outcome could range from a simple reprimand to more severe sanctions, depending on the findings.
Implications for PDP: Internal Struggles
This probe into Ugochinyere is a microcosm of the PDPโs broader struggles. The party, which has been trying to regain its footing nationally, is riddled with internal conflicts. The tension between Fubara and Wike is just one example of the factional battles that could undermine the partyโs efforts to present a united front.
Ugochinyereโs role as a spokesperson for opposition lawmakers adds another layer of complexity. His actions and the subsequent probe could influence the PDPโs dynamics, affecting alliances and power structures within the party.
The Repercussions: Beyond the House
The ramifications of this probe extend beyond the walls of the House of Representatives. For Ugochinyere, this could either bolster his position as a defiant voice against established power figures or isolate him politically if the probe finds him culpable. For the House, this incident could set a precedent for how internal disagreements and breaches of privilege are handled.
Furthermore, this controversy could influence public perception of the PDP and its leaders. How the party navigates this internal strife will be crucial in maintaining its credibility and appeal to voters.
Conclusion: A Precarious Path Ahead
As the Committee on Ethics and Privileges embarks on its investigation, all eyes will be on how the House of Representatives manages this politically charged issue. The probe into Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere is not just about a procedural dispute; it is a reflection of the deeper political currents within the PDP and the broader Nigerian political landscape.
The outcome of this probe could have lasting implications for the unity and direction of the PDP, the conduct of its members, and the integrity of Nigeriaโs legislative processes.
