In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeriaโs political landscape, the Citizens Action for Good Governance (CAGG) has issued a scathing indictment of the G-60 Opposition Group led by Representative Ikenga Ugochinyere. The CAGG convened a press conference on July 10, 2024, in Abuja, to address what it described as the โegregious meddlingโ of the G-60 in the political crises and recent Court of Appeal judgment in Rivers State.

The Root of the Crisis
The political turmoil in Rivers State, primarily an internal issue within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been further inflamed by the G-60โs involvement. Instead of promoting unity and working towards a resolution, Rep. Ikenga and his group have been accused of taking sides and exacerbating the situation. This raises serious questions about the true intentions and purpose of the G-60.
The CAGGโs Stance
Garba Murtala, a co-convener of CAGG, did not mince words in his criticism of Honorable Ikenga. Murtala pointed out that Ikenga has been linked to controversies related to militancy and violence in his home state and constituency. Despite these serious allegations, Ikenga has not demonstrated the same level of commitment to addressing insecurity issues in Imo State. โHis lack of action is a clear indication of his priorities, which seem to be centered around personal gain rather than the welfare of the people,โ Murtala stated.
The G-60โs Failings
The CAGGโs criticisms extend beyond Ikengaโs personal failings to the broader actions of the G-60 group. According to Murtala, the G-60 has failed to provide meaningful solutions to national issues, instead opting for self-serving press conferences that promote individual political ambitions. โHonorable Ugochinyere’s actions, such as creating factional groups and inciting violence, do not serve the interests of the Nigerian people,โ Murtala continued. โHis behavior is a stark reminder of the dangers of political selfishness and the need for leaders to prioritize the common good.โ
Call to Order
In a passionate plea, the CAGG urged Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere and the G-60 group to cease their divisive actions and work towards fostering unity and progress within the opposition parties. โThe people of Nigeria deserve leaders who prioritize the common good over personal gain,โ Murtala said. โWe demand an end to the meddling in Rivers State’s internal affairs and a focus on addressing the pressing issues facing our nation.โ
Misinterpretation of Court Judgments
One of the most serious accusations levelled against the G-60 is their misinterpretation of the recent Court of Appeal judgment. The CAGG accused the group of deliberately distorting the judgment to suit their own narrative, thereby impugning the integrity of the courts. โThis is an ignoble act and a flagrant disregard for the rule of law,โ Murtala declared. โTheir actions also show a blatant disrespect for President Tinubu’s efforts to broker a peaceful resolution.โ
Respect for Institutions
The CAGG emphasized the importance of respecting the institutions that uphold Nigeriaโs democracy. โWe demand an apology from the group for their reckless behaviour and demand that they respect the institutions that uphold our democracy,โ Murtala said. โLet us strive for a democracy built on principles of integrity, unity, and good conscience. This is a call to order and a call to serve in the true Nigerian spirit. We must work together to build a brighter future for all Nigerians.โ
The Larger Implications
The ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and the actions of the G-60 have far-reaching implications for Nigeriaโs democracy. The CAGGโs statement underscores the need for all political actors to prioritize the common good and respect the rule of law. โThe law must prevail over sentimental falsehood as the Rivers State political crisis lingers on,โ Murtala insisted. โAny further attempts by the Ugochinyere group of G-60 to encourage Governor Fubara in disrespecting the Nigerian constitution, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the judiciary through incoherent lines of sarcasm, satire, illegal actions, and unstructured side-talks would no longer be tolerated. Enough is enough.โ
Conclusion
The Citizens Action for Good Governance has made a strong case against the so-called G-60 Opposition Group and its self-styled leader, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere. Their call for unity, respect for the rule of law, and prioritization of the common good over personal gain is a timely reminder of the values that should underpin Nigeriaโs democracy. As the political crisis in Rivers State continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the G-60 will heed this call to order and work towards a more constructive role in the countryโs political discourse.
