The Unfolding Drama: Briton Accused of Sponsoring #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria Fires Back with Explosive Allegations

In what is fast becoming one of the most sensational and politically charged stories of the year, the British national, Andrew Wynne, accused of sponsoring the #EndBadGovernance protests in Nigeria, has launched a scathing counterattack against the Nigeria Police Force. Speaking from the United Kingdom, Wynne has alleged that during a covert July 7th operation, the Nigerian police not only unlawfully invaded his Abuja-based bookshop, Iva Valley Bookshop, but also engaged in outright theft, stealing his granddaughter’s bicycle. These allegations come in the wake of the Nigerian governmentโs recent actions, including declaring Wynne wanted and placing a staggering N20 million bounty on his head.
Treason Allegations and International Repercussions
The Nigerian government has not minced words in its pursuit of Wynne, levelling the grave accusation of treason against him. The controversy stems from the governmentโs claim that Wynne played a pivotal role in organising the massive #EndBadGovernance protests that swept through Nigeria, allegedly stirring unrest and threatening national security.
On Monday, the Nigeria Police Force declared Wynne and his alleged accomplice, Lucky Obiyan, wanted, pushing the political temperature to an unprecedented high. Wynne, however, has categorically denied these accusations, asserting his innocence and condemning the government’s attempts to pin the protests on a foreign scapegoat.
“The government just wants to blame me, as a foreigner, for the massive protests. They need to address the massive poverty that has got much worse in the last 15 months,” Wynne said in an exclusive conversation with one of our correspondents. His words echo the sentiments of many Nigerians who have taken to the streets to protest the worsening economic conditions and perceived governmental failures.
A Night of Intrigue: The July 7th Invasion
The night of July 7th, 2024, will likely be etched in the annals of Nigeria’s political history as a night of intrigue and controversy. According to Wynne, under the cover of darkness, officers of the Nigeria Police Force stormed Labour House in Abuja, where his bookshop is located. Wynne alleges that the police did not stop at ransacking the premises but went as far as to steal personal property, including his granddaughter’s bicycle.
โYes, but as I am completely innocent, they have no evidence against me,โ Wynne insisted. โThe police took all my books from Iva Valley Bookshop, they ransacked my home, and stole my granddaughterโs bicycle, and yet they still found no evidence.โ
The gravity of Wynneโs allegations has added a new layer of complexity to an already convoluted case. The Britonโs claims have sparked outrage among human rights advocates and have drawn international attention to what is being described as a flagrant abuse of power by the Nigerian authorities.
Police Pushback: Nigeria Police Force Issues a Defiant Response
Not one to be outdone, the Nigeria Police Force has issued a defiant response to Wynneโs allegations. Addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, issued a challenge to the Briton, urging him to come out of hiding if he truly believed in his innocence.
โHe (Wynne) has been contacted several times. He has been so faceless,โ Adejobi declared. โUp till now, he has not shown up. We have been able to trace his private school. We visited his school; has he shown up? We have interrogated staff and people working with him. Has he shown up?โ
Adejobiโs remarks have raised questions about Wynneโs whereabouts and intentions. The police, it seems, are intent on portraying Wynne as a fugitive, hiding from justice, and using his platform to incite unrest from afar.
The Case of the Mysterious School
In a surprising twist, Adejobi revealed that the police had successfully traced and discovered a school owned by Wynne in Nigeria. This revelation adds a new dimension to the case, suggesting that Wynne may have deeper ties to the country than previously thought. The police spokespersonโs challenge for Wynne to show up and defend his alleged followers, who are already in custody, further heightens the stakes in this high-profile case.
โWe have established an offence or offences against him, and we have even declared him wanted. His accomplices have been charged in court,โ Adejobi stated. โLet him come out. At least those people worked for him. As a good leader, a businessman, and a smart man who mobilised and organised sleeper cells to cause problems in Nigeria, he should have come out as a good leader and proven to his followers that he was a good leader. Let him come and meet us.โ
The Courtโs Hammer: Arrest Warrant Issued Against Wynne
As if the situation couldnโt get more intense, on Tuesday, Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an arrest warrant against Wynne and several Nigerian nationals. The charges? Conspiracy, treason, incitement to mutiny, and inciting disaffection against the governmentโserious allegations that carry severe penalties under Nigerian law.
The courtโs decision, which was based on an ex parte motion filed by the Inspector-General of Police, authorises all police officers and other security agencies in the country to utilise their full powers to secure the arrest of Wynne and his alleged accomplices.
Justice Nwiteโs ruling has been met with mixed reactions. Some see it as a necessary step to safeguard national security, while others view it as an overreach of power, an attempt by the government to silence dissent and suppress legitimate protest.
Femi Falana Weighs In: The Battle Against โTrivialisedโ Treason Charges
The story took another dramatic turn when prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, entered the fray. Speaking at the 1st International Anti-corruption and Climate Change conference in Abuja, Falana criticised the governmentโs increasing use of treason charges to stifle dissent, accusing the authorities of trivialising the charge.
โI have been under pressure in the last 24 hours from Nigeria and abroad. People are wondering why the charge of treason is being trivialised in our country. And how can you say because people protested, they are being charged with treason?โ Falana questioned.
His comments strike at the heart of the ongoing debate about the limits of protest and the governmentโs responsibility to protect free speech while maintaining order. Falanaโs intervention has further complicated the governmentโs position, potentially setting the stage for a high-stakes legal battle that could have far-reaching implications for Nigeriaโs political landscape.
Zoom Controversy: Police Reject Wynneโs Proposal for Virtual Interrogation
In another controversial move, Wynne had proposed a Zoom interrogation as a means of clearing his name. The suggestion was swiftly rejected by the Nigeria Police Force, which cited the gravity of the charges against Wynne as the reason for needing an in-person interrogation.
โWho is going to take a Zoom meeting for a suspect in this kind of offence? No,โ Adejobi declared emphatically. โLet him come. I am still calling him again. Let him come. Suppose heโs a good man. If he is a genuine businessman in Nigeria, let Andrew Wynne report to the police so that he can come and clear some grey areas.โ
The rejection of the Zoom proposal has only fuelled speculation about the governmentโs motives and whether Wynneโs fears of an unfair trial are justified.
A Growing Movement: Calls for International Intervention
As the drama unfolds, there is growing pressure from international human rights organisations for an independent investigation into the Nigerian governmentโs handling of the protests and the subsequent charges against Wynne. Advocacy groups have raised concerns about the potential for human rights abuses and the erosion of democratic freedoms in Nigeria.
Wynne, for his part, has continued to maintain his innocence, urging the international community to scrutinise the Nigerian governmentโs actions and to support the rights of protesters who have been detained and allegedly tortured.
โI am concerned for the detainees who have been arrested and tortured. The NLC needs to take action to get them freed,โ Wynne said.
The Road Ahead: Whatโs Next for Andrew Wynne and Nigeria?
As the situation stands, Nigeria is at a crossroads. The case against Andrew Wynne is more than just a legal battle; it is a reflection of the larger struggle between a government seeking to maintain order in the face of economic and social unrest, and a population increasingly frustrated with the status quo.
The arrest warrant, the allegations of theft, the international outcryโthese are all pieces of a larger puzzle that will likely shape Nigeriaโs political future. Whether Wynne will return to Nigeria to face the charges against him, or whether this case will escalate into an international diplomatic crisis, remains to be seen.
What is certain, however, is that the #EndBadGovernance movement, and the controversies surrounding it, have struck a chord not only in Nigeria but across the world. The actions of the Nigerian government in the coming days and weeks will be closely watched, and the outcomes could have significant implications for the country’s democratic institutions.
