Fifth Anniversary in Bayelsa: Governor Diri Unveils Transformative Road Project and Launches Free Medical Outreach

YENAGOA, Bayelsa State โ€” In a landmark celebration that has set tongues wagging across the Niger Delta, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has marked his fifth anniversary in office with an impressive double-pronged developmental initiative.

The festivities, held in the state capital Yenagoa, saw the inauguration of the meticulously upgraded Road 24 High Profile Road in Okaka and the flagging off of a free medical outreach in Ikarama community.

The events were graced by the presence of Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, whose laudatory remarks highlighted a spirit of regional collaboration and developmental continuity.

A Transformational Milestone for Bayelsa

On Monday, February 10, 2025, Governor Diri took centre stage, unveiling a vision of modernity and progress for Bayelsa. The revitalisation of the Road 24 High Profile Road in Okaka was described as โ€œthe widest road in the capital cityโ€, a testament to the administrationโ€™s unwavering commitment to infrastructural excellence.

Featuring dual carriageways flanked by solar-powered street lights and a robust shoulder on either side, the road stretches approximately 1,475 metres with a generous width of nine metres on each carriageway, marking it as a beacon of the state’s renewed commitment to sustainable development.

Senator Bassey Otu, also serving as the vice chairman of the South-South Governors Forum, was effusive in his praise.

โ€œGovernor Diri is a bold and courageous leader making judicious use of the federation allocation revenues,โ€ he declared.

Otu emphasised that such projects are not mere infrastructural developments but vital arteries fuelling the socio-economic transformation of Bayelsa.

The senatorโ€™s commendation underscored the value of continuity in governance, particularly in completing projects inherited from previous administrationsโ€”a commitment that has, according to him, paved the way for a brighter future for the state.

A Vision for a Modernised Capital

Governor Diri, speaking to an enthusiastic crowd, remarked:

โ€œThe inauguration of road infrastructure and other projects marks the commemoration of our fifth year in office. The face of the capital city, Yenagoa, is changing for good.โ€

His words resonated deeply with the assembly of dignitaries, traditional rulers, and local residents who had gathered to witness the transformation first-hand.

The project, originally initiated by his predecessor Senator Seriake Dickson, was resurrected by the current government to not only improve connectivity but also to symbolise progress and unity.

Chief Ernest Amadi, the Project Engineer, hailed the development as a โ€œgame-changerโ€ for Yenagoa, affirming that such infrastructural enhancements are integral to the stateโ€™s long-term prosperity.

Healthcare at the Heart of the Celebration

In a move that underscores the administrationโ€™s prioritisation of public health, the anniversary celebrations were further marked by the commencement of a statewide free medical outreach in Ikarama community.

This initiative, a cornerstone of Governor Diriโ€™s agenda, aims to provide comprehensive healthcare services to all Bayelsans irrespective of their financial capabilities.

The facility at Ikarama, originally constructed in 1998 by Agip (now Oando) as part of its corporate social responsibility, has been refurbished and repurposed to function as a fully operational cottage hospital.

โ€œIt is heartwarming that today we have gathered to mark the flag off of the fifth anniversary of your government of Assured Prosperity in grand style with a medical outreach in Ikarama community. We cannot be talking about prosperity without taking care of our health,โ€ Governor Diri emphasised in his address.

He proudly noted that the hospital now houses a dedicated team comprising a medical doctor, nurses, and support staff, ensuring that health remains at the forefront of the governmentโ€™s developmental agenda.

The initiative has already yielded tangible benefits. The outreach programme, which also featured the administration of vaccines to children, has successfully provided free medical intervention to indigent patients.

In addition to minor surgeries conducted on-site, the programme has established referral protocols to more advanced medical centres located in Otuasegha, Okolobiri, Diete Koki, and other secondary and tertiary facilities.

The move, according to Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, the Commissioner for Health, represents a significant stride towards eradicating health disparities in the state.

Regional and International Endorsements

The event was further bolstered by the presence of international health partners. Dr Marcus Oluwadare, representing the World Health Organization (WHO), extended his gratitude to Governor Diri for his unwavering support to health initiatives.

โ€œBayelsa State witnessed five health outbreaks in 2024, but they were successfully tackled thanks to the robust support of the government,โ€ Dr Oluwadare remarked.

His message reinforced the notion that rapid government response and strong partnerships are indispensable in managing public health crises.

Other notable attendees included the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and members of the state legislature such as the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere.

Their presence underscored the broad-based support for the governmentโ€™s initiatives and the collective commitment to driving transformative development across the state.

A Testament to Progressive Leadership

Governor Diriโ€™s administration has made it unequivocally clear that his government is poised to leave an indelible mark on Bayelsaโ€™s landscape. The comprehensive approach of addressing both infrastructural deficits and public health challenges is being hailed as a model for holistic governance in Nigeria.

The strategic investment in road infrastructure is expected to bolster commerce and mobility, while the free medical outreach is set to elevate the standard of healthcare for countless Bayelsans.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Moses Teibowei, provided further insight into the technical brilliance behind the road project.

Awarded originally to L and D Construction Company of Nigeria in 2012, the project had been languishing in a state of disrepair until the current governmentโ€™s intervention.

Teiboweiโ€™s reassurances regarding the roadโ€™s quality and longevity have instilled confidence among the local populace, who are now optimistic about the broader economic ripple effects of such developments.

Traditional Endorsements and Community Involvement

Local leaders and traditional rulers have also been vocal in their support. His Royal Highness, Wariebi Jonah, the paramount ruler of Ikarama community, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Diri for the revival of the hospital and the broader development agenda.

โ€œThe support of our traditional institutions is crucial, and the governmentโ€™s consistent delivery on its promises is what makes these developments possible,โ€ he stated.

Such endorsements have further cemented the alliance between government and community, ensuring that development projects are both locally embraced and effectively maintained.

Looking Ahead: A Promise of Continuous Transformation

As Bayelsa State embarks on a new chapter of development, the resonating message from the event was clear: the future of the state is being rewritten. Governor Diriโ€™s dual emphasis on infrastructural advancement and robust healthcare delivery encapsulates a governance model that is both progressive and inclusive.

In summarising the dayโ€™s momentous events, Governor Diri left no doubt that his administrationโ€™s commitment to progress will continue unabated.

โ€œThe face of Yenagoa is changing, and it will continue to change for good,โ€ he affirmed, leaving a lasting impression on a state eager for transformation.

With the support of key political figures, community leaders, and international health partners, Bayelsa is set to be a beacon of development and prosperity in Nigeria.

This sensational development marks not only a celebratory milestone for Governor Diri but also sets the stage for a future where robust infrastructure and accessible healthcare become the cornerstones of Bayelsaโ€™s socio-economic progress.
