In a scandal that has set the corridors of the Nigerian Senate ablaze, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has made startling revelations regarding allegations of sexual harassment levied by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the representative for Kogi Central.

The incendiary claims, delivered during an International Women’s Day commemoration, have ignited a fierce debate over the treatment of women and the integrity of political conduct in Nigeria’s legislative house.

According to Akpabio, the embattled lawmaker—suspended for six months following serious allegations—has not only traumatised him but has also inflicted considerable damage on the collective psyche of the Senate.

“Natasha traumatised me, and many of my colleagues,” he declared, vehemently denying any wrongdoing on his part and alleging that her accusations were nothing more than a politically motivated charade.

The Senate President contended that the allegations only surfaced following a change of committee and a subsequent shift in her seating arrangement, thereby suggesting that internal political manoeuvrings might have precipitated the controversy.

The timing of these accusations adds further fuel to an already blazing fire. Akpabio recounted that the alleged incident took place on 8 December 2023—just a day prior to his birthday celebrations at a major stadium event.

He maintained that until the reshuffling of her committee, no instance of sexual harassment had been raised by any concerned party.

“From that day forward, no one—not my wife, not any Nigerian citizen, not even a husband—had ever heard of any such indiscretion until Natasha’s committee was altered,” he asserted, implying that the timing of the allegation was suspiciously aligned with political repositioning.

The fallout from the scandal has reverberated beyond the Senate walls, drawing stern admonitions from prominent political figures.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, have both voiced concerns over the Senate’s handling of the matter.

They warned that a toxic political atmosphere, particularly one that undermines the plight of women, could have lasting repercussions on Nigeria’s democratic fabric.

Major opposition parties have also expressed outrage, accusing the Senate leadership of orchestrating a cover-up and failing to protect the rights of women within the institution.

Critics argue that the saga is yet another chapter in a long history of politically charged sexual harassment allegations that have marred the reputation of Nigeria’s legislative processes.

Detractors contend that such episodes not only erode public confidence in governmental institutions but also cast a long shadow over the country’s commitment to gender equality.

In an era when international scrutiny of political transparency and accountability is at an all-time high, the allegations against Akpabio and his defence against Natasha’s claims raise pressing questions about the efficacy of internal disciplinary measures and the influence of partisan politics in matters of personal misconduct.

The dramatic defence, replete with provocative rhetoric about the beauty of women and a staunch denial of any inappropriate behaviour, has only deepened the divide between supporters and detractors of the Senate President.

While some see his statements as an emphatic refutation of baseless allegations, others interpret them as a stark indication of a deeply entrenched culture of impunity and the politicisation of serious misconduct claims.

As Nigeria braces for what could be a protracted political battle, this latest scandal is poised to become a watershed moment in the country’s ongoing struggle to reconcile political ambition with ethical governance.
