The Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee was officially established on Tuesday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking a significant advancement in the promotion of social justice and fair pay for Nigerian workers. The president, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, underscored the critical role that the committee plays in guaranteeing a minimum wage that is consistent with the values of sustainability and equity for all levels of government and employers.
Through his deputy, President Tinubu emphasised how crucial it is that the committee prioritise social justice and equity while setting the new salary. He urged the committee members to prioritize the sustainable payment capacity of each tier of government and other employers or businesses while striving for a consensus that is acceptable to all stakeholders.
“Our objective should be to surpass the basic Social Protection Floor for all Nigerian workers, considering the sustainable payment capacity of each tier of government and other employers or businesses,” stated the President. He highlighted the minimum wage as a fundamental aspect of fair compensation for labor, emphasizing its roots in social justice.
The President voiced hope that the committee’s discussions would produce a decision that was universally agreed upon. He emphasised the labour force’s crucial role in the country’s growth and its status as the cornerstone of advancement.
The foundation of the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee confirms the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of the labour force and, consequently, the welfare of the entire country. Tinubu’s administration has continuously championed the cause of Nigerian workers.
Expectations are high for a ground-breaking ruling as the committee gets started debating since it should not only solve the workers’ urgent needs but also pave the way for equitable and long-lasting compensation policies across the nation.
