In a move that has sent shockwaves through the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) community, the City of David Parish, one of the most prominent parishes in Region 20, Victoria Island, Lagos, has undergone a significant leadership change. Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, who has been at the helm of the parish for many years, has been transferred, making way for Pastor Kayode Pitan to step in as the new pastor. This dramatic shift was confirmed by First Weekly Magazine and officially announced during the church’s monthly thanksgiving service on Sunday, June 2.

Shockwaves Hit City of David Parish as RCCG Leadership Overhaul Shakes Congregation

Leadership Shakeup Confirmed

The change in leadership has been corroborated by high-ranking officials within the RCCG. Present at the City of David Parish to oversee the transition were notable figures such as retired National Overseer Pastor Obayemi, Pastor Johnson Odesola, and Region 9 leader, Pastor Pandel. Their presence underscored the significance of this shift in the parish’s leadership.

Unprecedented Absence

What has made this transition even more startling is the absence of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade and his wife, Pastor Siju Iluyomade, from the service. This absence was particularly unusual given that it was the first Sunday of the month, a time traditionally marked by their active participation. The service itself was notably brief, with Pastor Trevor Akindele, Pastor Iluyomade’s assistant, stepping in to conduct the proceedings.

A Grave Announcement

Following the service, an announcement was made instructing all pastors, ministers, workers, and elders to remain for a meeting, signaling the gravity of the situation. The congregation was left in a state of suspense and speculation, pondering the reasons behind this unexpected change.

A Displeased Pastor

Sources close to the situation reveal that Pastor Idowu Iluyomade is not pleased with the transfer. Having dedicated extensive efforts to the development of the Trinity Towersโ€”a project valued at over 10 billion Naira and still indebted to Access Bankโ€”Pastor Iluyomade’s dissatisfaction stems from a sense of unfinished business. Moreover, at 65 years old, he reportedly feels that he has not yet reached the retirement age of 70, adding to his displeasure.

Controversial Celebrations

Adding fuel to the fire, rumors suggest that the recent 60th birthday celebration of Pastor Siju Iluyomade might have influenced the decision. The celebration took place shortly after the death of former Access Bank Managing Director Mr. Herbert Wigwe, a key figure in fundraising efforts for the Trinity Towers. Pastor Iluyomade had allegedly advised against the celebration, fearing potential repercussions, which now seem to have materialized.

Routine Transfers or Strategic Moves?

Despite the apparent discontent, sources within the RCCG leadership maintain that such pastoral transfers are a routine practice within the mission. These transfers typically occur after a pastor has served several years in one location, aiming to bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to different parishes.

New Beginnings at Throne of Grace

Pastor Idowu Iluyomade has been reassigned to the RCCG Throne of Grace, Ebute Metta, Lagos, the headquarters of the mission. Here, he will serve as the Pastor-in-Charge of elders, a role that comes with its own set of responsibilities and challenges. This new position marks a significant shift from his previous leadership at the City of David Parish, known for its affluent congregation and high-profile members.

Reaction from the Congregation

The news of Pastor Iluyomade’s transfer has elicited a mixed reaction from the congregation. Some members express disappointment, citing his substantial contributions to the parish, particularly in spearheading the Trinity Towers project. Others, however, view the change as an opportunity for new leadership to bring innovative ideas and growth to the parish.

Financial Implications

The transfer also raises questions about the financial implications for the Trinity Towers project. With Pastor Iluyomade at the forefront of the fundraising and development efforts, his departure could impact the project’s momentum and financial stability. The parish now faces the challenge of continuing the project under new leadership while ensuring that the financial obligations to Access Bank are met.

The Road Ahead for Pastor Iluyomade

As Pastor Iluyomade transitions to his new role at the Throne of Grace, he faces the task of adapting to a different environment and set of responsibilities. His experience and leadership skills will undoubtedly be valuable assets in his new position, but the shift also requires a period of adjustment and renewed focus on his pastoral duties.

Conclusion

The leadership shakeup at the RCCG City of David Parish marks a significant chapter in the church’s history. While the reasons behind the transfer remain a topic of speculation, the change underscores the dynamic nature of leadership within the RCCG. As the congregation navigates this transition, the focus remains on continuing the mission of the church and fostering a community of faith and growth.
