The INEC’s update on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recall process intensifies political tensions in Nigeria. Despite rectifying flaws in a recall petition, Natasha accuses INEC of bias for not dismissing it outright. Critics argue that leniency undermines electoral integrity, while INEC maintains transparency in its verification process, stirring public distrust.

ABUJA, Nigeria — In a development that has further inflamed Nigeria’s already turbulent political climate, Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued a press release on Wednesday 26 March 2025 detailing a significant update on the recall process targeting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.

The update confirms that the petitioners have now provided the missing contact details—complete with addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses—in accordance with Clause 2(a) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024.

Yet, this procedural correction has done little to ease the fervour of dissent expressed by Senator Natasha, who continues to level severe criticism against INEC’s handling of the recall petition.

Through her lawyer, Victor Giwa, the Senator has accused the Commission of displaying partiality by opting not to dismiss the recall petition outright, despite its manifest deficiencies.

“By not declaring the petition incompetent and instead advising the petitioners on how to remedy their errors, INEC is effectively taking sides, thus undermining the integrity of our democratic process,” her representative contended.

The political controversy traces its origins to the initial submission of the recall petition, which, while boasting signatures from a significant proportion of the constituency’s 474,554 registered voters, was riddled with procedural flaws.

Critics of the petition—including Senator Natasha—have argued that such deficiencies should have led to its immediate rejection rather than a chance for rectification.

To them, INEC’s decision to allow the petitioners to update their contact information smacks of an undue leniency that favours political manoeuvring over strict adherence to electoral regulations.

INEC’s press statement also revealed that a formal letter notifying Senator Natasha of the petition’s receipt was dispatched to her official address and duly copied to the presiding officer of the Senate.

This act, the Commission insists, underscores its commitment to transparency. The next crucial phase involves a meticulous scrutiny of the signatory list to verify that the petition has indeed been endorsed by more than 50% of the registered voters in the senatorial district.

The outcome of this verification process—conducted using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS)—will be pivotal in determining whether the recall process can move forward.

Political observers have noted that this latest update further deepens the rift between Senator Natasha and INEC.

While the Commission portrays its actions as a measure to safeguard the recall process and ensure compliance with the regulatory framework, the Senator maintains that such steps only serve to erode public trust in the electoral system.

“The process should have been rendered null at its inception due to its inherent procedural defects,” she asserts, suggesting that any delay or leniency risks setting a dangerous precedent in electoral accountability.

The recall saga is unfolding at a time when public scepticism towards political institutions is at an all-time high.

Critics argue that the entire episode not only exposes the vulnerabilities within the recall mechanism but also highlights the growing partisan battles that threaten Nigeria’s democratic fabric.

As INEC embarks on its verification process over the coming days, all eyes remain on whether the Commission can deliver an outcome that is both transparent and free from allegations of bias.

With political tensions running high, the outcome of this recall process may well signal a turning point in the ongoing struggle between stringent electoral oversight and political expediency—a battle that continues to captivate the nation’s attention.
