In a dramatic turn that has sent shockwaves through the corridors of power in Abuja, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, erstwhile National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), abruptly stepped down on 27 June 2025, citing deteriorating health.

Elected in August 2023 to steer the party out of its embattled crisis, Ganduje’s tenure was a roller‑coaster of factional infighting, court wranglings and defections that left many wondering whether the ruling party could hold itself together through to the next election cycle.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential standard‑bearer and once-governor of Anambra State, took to X to commend Ganduje’s decision, lauding it as both “wise and honourable” and a challenge to all leaders whose ailing health undermines their ability to govern effectively.

Obi’s words carry weight: with Nigeria’s headline inflation easing marginally to 22.97 per cent in May 2025—down from 23.71 per cent in April—citizens demand agile leadership capable of decisive action on runaway prices, unemployment and insecurity.

Yet the spectacle of Ganduje’s departure exposes a deeper malaise. Political retirements for health reasons are rare in Nigeria’s rough‑and‑tumble system, where many cling to office despite glaring infirmities.

By relinquishing power rather than entrenching himself behind layers of spin‑doctors and legal technicalities, Ganduje has set an unprecedented precedent—one that Obi urges his peers to emulate.

This resignation also arrives at a moment when APC unity is under strain. With Acting Chairman Ali Dalori now at the helm pending a full National Executive Committee meeting, the party faces a critical test: can it rally behind new leadership in time to address the country’s pressing challenges, or will internal rivalries deepen the crisis?

For Nigeria’s fractious democracy, Ganduje’s exit is more than a change of guard; it is a clarion call for accountability, vitality and integrity in public office—qualities that, as Obi argues, are non‑negotiable if the nation is to surmount its manifold trials.
