LEKKI, Lagos โ€” The pump price of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) in Nigeria has witnessed a significant drop from its recent high of about N1,700/litre to approximately N1,350/litre in various locations across the country. This remarkable reduction in diesel prices can be attributed to the commencement of diesel sales by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a game-changing development in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The refinery, with its $20 billion investment, has started supplying diesel to registered oil marketers, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s quest for energy sufficiency and self-reliance.

The pump price of diesel (AGO) in Nigeria has witnessed a significant drop from its recent high of about N1,700/litre to approximately N1,350/litre in various locations across the country. Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

Dangote Refinery’s Diesel Sales:

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a $20 billion mega project, began supplying diesel to the domestic market last Wednesday. Each registered oil marketer received a minimum of one million litres of diesel from the refinery, purchasing the product at prices ranging from N1,225/litre to N1,300/litre, depending on the volume of purchase. This strategic move by Dangote is poised to revolutionize the energy landscape in Nigeria, particularly in the diesel market, by significantly driving down prices and enhancing accessibility for consumers.

Impact on Diesel Prices:

The introduction of Dangote refinery’s diesel into the market has already begun to exert downward pressure on diesel prices nationwide. From a recent peak of approximately N1,700/litre, the pump price of diesel has dropped to around N1,350/litre in various locations, including Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun states. This price reduction is a welcome development for consumers and businesses alike, as it promises relief from the financial burden imposed by high diesel costs.

Future Prospects:

Furthermore, Dangote Petroleum Refinery is gearing up to release Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) into the domestic market by May this year, adding another dimension to its contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector. This imminent release of petrol underscores the refinery’s commitment to meeting the nation’s energy needs comprehensively. As anticipation builds for the availability of petrol from Dangote refinery, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential impact on petrol prices and overall energy security in Nigeria.

Challenges and Regulatory Hurdles:

Despite its monumental achievements, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has encountered challenges and regulatory hurdles in its quest to release refined products into the market. Lingering regulatory approvals delayed the refinery’s initial plan to commence the sale of aviation fuel (Jet A1) and diesel in January. However, with persistence and determination, the refinery has overcome these obstacles, signalling its resilience and commitment to its objectives.

Acknowledgments and Appreciations

Aliko Dangote, the visionary behind the refinery, expressed gratitude to key stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, and Nigerians, for their unwavering support and belief in the project. Their contributions have been instrumental in propelling the refinery towards operational success and realizing its transformative potential for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Dangote Refinery’s Export Ventures:

In addition to its domestic operations, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has ventured into the export market, issuing tenders to sell fuel cargoes for export. This strategic move positions Nigeria as a potential net exporter of fuel to other West African countries, signalling a significant shift in the region’s energy dynamics. Dangote’s foray into fuel exports underscores its ambition to leverage Nigeria’s oil resources for regional influence and economic growth.

Conclusion:

The commencement of diesel sales by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery marks a historic milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards energy sufficiency and self-reliance. With the refinery’s promise to release petrol into the market in May, the nation stands poised for a transformative shift in its energy landscape. As diesel prices decline and anticipation builds for the availability of petrol from Dangote refinery, Nigerians can look forward to a future defined by energy security, economic prosperity, and regional influence.
