ABUJA, Nigeria — In a concerted effort to bolster Nigeria’s security architecture and confront evolving security challenges, participants of the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN) Course 8/24 Team 2 embarked on a significant study tour to the Joint Task Force Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) on March 26, 2024. This visit, which was organized as part of the Internal Security curriculum, is aimed to foster collaborative interagency efforts and deepen insights into internal security dynamics within the Nigerian context.

Major Hasimu Sa’ad Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer of Army War College Nigeria, highlighted the importance of the visit, while emphasizing its role in equipping operational-level officers with the requisite skills to address multifaceted security threats effectively. Operation SAFE HAVEN, which is led by Major-General A.E. Abubakar, welcomed the participants warmly, and highlighted the significance of a comprehensive approach to security in enhancing national peace and stability.
The theme of the study tour, “Comprehensive Approach to Security as an Imperative for Addressing Multi-Dimensional Security Threats for Enhanced National Security,” resonated well with the participants and emphasized the need for concerted efforts involving various stakeholders, including the military, to combat security challenges effectively.
During the visit, participants engaged in interactive sessions, received briefings on OPSH activities, and exchanged insights on operational strategies. Brigadier-General A.U. Gumel, representing Major-General Abubakar, reiterated the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing emerging security threats, and emphasized the pivotal role of interagency cooperation in military operations.
General Ishaya Maina, the Commandant of AWCN, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and stressed the significance of the study tour in enhancing participants’ understanding of internal security operations. He emphasized the vital role of research findings from such tours in informing future operational strategies and policy formulations.
Lieutenant Colonel K.I. Ugwanyi, speaking on behalf of the participants, acknowledged the enriching experience gained during the study tour. He emphasized the value of firsthand exposure to OPSH’s operational dynamics and its applicability in future research endeavours aimed at fortifying Nigeria’s national security architecture.
The visit, which included souvenir presentations and a memorable group photograph, symbolized the fruitful collaboration between AWCN and Operation SAFE HAVEN. With 35 military participants and 21 representatives from other security agencies, the event demonstrated the commitment of both institutions to fostering synergy and cooperation in advancing Nigeria’s security agenda.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with diverse security challenges, initiatives like the study tour to Operation SAFE HAVEN serve as critical avenues for enhancing the capacity of security personnel and promoting interagency collaboration. The insights gleaned from such engagements are invaluable in shaping proactive and effective responses to the evolving security landscape, ultimately contributing to the nation’s peace and stability.
