ABUJA, Nigeria — In a dramatic development that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja has issued an interim injunction halting the expulsion of Senator Samuel Anyanwu from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The court’s ruling, delivered by Justice Y. Halilu on 20 March 2025, restrains the PDP, its acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, and members of the National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) led by former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi from proceeding with any measures aimed at ousting the controversial senator.

The ruling comes on the back of an ex-parte motion (Motion Ex-parte M/3951/2025), filed on 17 March 2025 with an affidavit of urgency.

During the hearing, the court carefully considered the submissions of Anyanwu’s counsel, K.C. O Njemanze, and M.L. Young-Arney, who argued vehemently against the expulsion order.

The High Court’s directive effectively puts a temporary stop to the NDC’s recommendation that Anyanwu, a well-known loyalist of ex-Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, be expelled from the party.

The controversy began when the NDC, led by Tom Ikimi, issued a damning report on 10 March 2025. According to the report, Anyanwu was accused of engaging in anti-party activities, a breach of Article 58 (1)(f) of the PDP Constitution 2017.

More alarmingly, the report alleged that the senator had disrupted the internal harmony of the party by inviting security agents, thugs, and other individuals to interfere with the routine operations at the PDP headquarters, located at Wadata Plaza, Plot 1970, Michael Opara Street, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

The incidents in question reportedly occurred on 29 January and 1 February 2025.

The NDC’s findings, which also included oral testimonies from prominent figures such as Hon. Afolabi Adekanbi and Dr Alex Adum, painted a picture of a man accused of undermining the very foundations of the PDP’s operational integrity.

In a letter signed by Ikimi and delivered to the acting National Chairman on 11 March 2025, the committee demanded the expulsion of Senator Anyanwu.

They argued that the senator’s conduct was not only in violation of the party’s constitutional provisions but also detrimental to the smooth and lawful conduct of the PDP’s business.

However, the High Court’s intervention has now thrown the party into further disarray. Justice Halilu’s interim injunction expressly restrains all officers, agents, and servants of the PDP—including Damagum and the NDC—from accepting, acting on, or implementing the committee’s findings, decisions, or recommendations.

The court’s order underscores the need for due process and emphasises that the matter must await a full hearing of the Motion on Notice for an Interlocutory Injunction, now scheduled for 7 April 2025.

Political analysts suggest that the court’s decision is a significant victory for democratic principles within the party.

“The injunction is a clear message that internal party disputes must be resolved through the established constitutional and legal channels rather than through extrajudicial measures,” commented one seasoned political observer.

The ruling has also raised questions about the management of party affairs, with many party members and political pundits expressing concerns over the potential for further internal strife.

Senator Anyanwu, whose political fortunes have long been a subject of heated debate, now finds himself at the centre of a battle that could have far-reaching implications for the PDP.

His alleged association with controversial figures and actions, as outlined in the Ikimi committee’s report, have only served to intensify the political drama.

Yet, with the court’s injunction in place, the senator’s expulsion is effectively on hold, allowing him to remain a key figure within the party as the legal process unfolds.

This latest development is being widely viewed as part of a broader struggle for control within the PDP. With rival factions vying for influence ahead of the next electoral cycle, the timing of the injunction has only heightened the stakes.

Political insiders believe that the outcome of the scheduled hearing on 7 April could well determine the future direction of the party and, by extension, influence Nigeria’s political dynamics in the run-up to forthcoming elections.

The court’s ruling has not only paused the momentum of any immediate punitive action against Senator Anyanwu but has also set the stage for what promises to be a contentious showdown within the PDP.

With tensions running high and the nation watching closely, the coming weeks are likely to be critical in shaping the future of one of Nigeria’s most influential political parties.
