ABUJA, FCT Nigeria โ€” The selection of Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho as Deputy Force Commander in the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) is a significant accomplishment for Nigeria. This historic appointment, which commemorates the outstanding achievements of General Esho, marks the first time a Nigerian has occupied such a significant position within MINURSO.

Brigadier General Esho, who is originally from Ondo State in western Nigeria, has had an amazing career propelled by perseverance and a commitment to duty. He rose to prominence as a leader after graduating with honours from the Nigerian Defence Academy with a master’s degree in strategic studies and an honours degree in mathematics. Throughout his military career, Brig Gen Esho showed tenacity, strategic intelligence, and a deep understanding of complex regional dynamics, making him a top candidate for peacekeeping postings across Africa.

Brigadier General Esho replaced Commodore Faustina Boakyewwa Anokye of the Ghana Navy in an official ceremony that was rich in ritual and significance. The transfer ceremony, which was seen by senior MINURSO officers such as Force Commander Maj Gen MD Fakhrul Ahsan and Head of Mission and Special Representative Mr. Alexander Ivanko, highlighted the importance of this appointment.

MINURSO was established by the UN Security Council in 1991 and is crucial to overseeing the referendum on self-determination of the Western Saharan people. The choice of Brigadier General Esho, who also demonstrates his military prowess, demonstrates the UN’s willingness to expand its peacekeeping force. In his capacity as Deputy Force Commander, he would prioritise upholding the safety and welfare of the native population in Western Sahara and bolstering MINURSO’s mandate.

The goals of MINURSO, as outlined by Brigadier General Esho, are encouraging communication, establishing trust between the communities, and actively engaging with the Sahrawi people. He thinks that cooperation and understanding are the only ways to establish a lasting peace, and the UN’s commitment to inclusive representation in international peacekeeping operations is demonstrated by his nomination.

Brigadier General Esho thanked everyone for their support and emphasised the value of diversity in peacekeeping operations. His appointment stands as an inspiration for aspiring Nigerian military personnel and young individuals across Africa. Brigadier General Esho’s achievement, as the first Nigerian Deputy Force Commander in MINURSO, represents Nigeria’s dedication to international peace and security and opens the door for more diverse and inclusive peacekeeping operations in the future.
