ABUJA, Nigeria — In what many are calling a critical turning point for the Nigerian Army, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, delivered a resounding address on Monday, December 9, 2024, setting the stage for an era of transformational leadership. Marking his formal assumption of command as the 24th Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Oluyede wasted no time in outlining his ambitious agenda for reshaping the military’s response to the country’s escalating security challenges.

This ceremony, held at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, was not merely a ceremonial event but a bold declaration of intent by the Nigerian Army’s new helmsman. With a focus on inclusivity, innovation, and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s complex security landscape, Lt. Gen. Oluyede signaled a significant departure from the status quo.
The Leadership Vision: Breaking Barriers with Inclusivity
Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s speech radiated a tone of determination and urgency as he pledged to adopt an inclusive leadership style. According to the COAS, this approach is aimed at fostering collaboration across all ranks of the Nigerian Army (NA) and strengthening its capacity to effectively respond to evolving threats.
“Inclusivity in leadership is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the Nigerian Army to stay ahead of modern security dynamics,” he remarked during his address to Principal Staff Officers. This inclusiveness, he explained, would extend to operational strategies, decision-making processes, and the welfare of all personnel.
The COAS paid glowing tributes to his predecessor, the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, whose unexpected demise left a void in the Nigerian Army’s leadership. He praised Lagbaja for his “exceptional service to the nation” and vowed to honor his legacy by steering the army into a new era of unity and purpose.
Innovation as a Strategic Imperative
In one of the most pivotal parts of his address, Lt. Gen. Oluyede stressed the necessity for commanders to adopt forward-thinking and innovative strategies. Nigeria’s security environment, characterised by an array of complex and shifting threats—from insurgency in the Northeast to communal clashes and banditry in other regions—requires adaptive solutions.
“I urge every commander to be creative in addressing security challenges,” the COAS stated emphatically. “We must think beyond conventional methods and embrace the dynamics of modern warfare.”
The newly minted COAS highlighted the importance of tailoring solutions to Nigeria’s unique security needs, particularly in the fight against terrorism and insurgency. He emphasised that innovative strategies would not only strengthen military efficiency but also restore confidence among Nigerians disillusioned by recurring security lapses.
A Firsthand Commitment: Bolstering Troop Morale
Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s speech reflected his hands-on approach to leadership. Recalling his recent visit to troops under the Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI in the Northeast, he reaffirmed his dedication to providing the resources and morale boosts necessary for success in the field.
The COAS made it clear that the welfare of troops would remain at the heart of his administration’s priorities. From adequate equipment supply to the provision of mental and physical support, Lt. Gen. Oluyede outlined a plan aimed at sustaining troop resilience and operational effectiveness.
“Morale is the backbone of military success,” he asserted. “Our soldiers must feel supported, appreciated, and motivated to fight for the peace and unity of our great nation.”
Tackling Fluid Threats with Proactivity
Acknowledging the evolving nature of Nigeria’s security crises, Lt. Gen. Oluyede called for an operational mindset that is both proactive and anticipatory. He emphasised that the Nigerian Army must not only respond to threats but also predict and prevent them.
“Our adversaries are evolving, and so must we,” he declared. “The Nigerian Army must remain ahead of the curve, adapting quickly to any changes in the security landscape.”
This sentiment aligns with his broader vision for a Nigerian Army that is not only reactive but also strategically positioned to forestall crises before they escalate.
A Regimental Tradition Steeped in Symbolism
The day’s solemnity extended beyond Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s ambitious declarations. The Chief of Administration Army, Major General Ohwonigho Akpor, provided a historical perspective on the regimental protocols that marked the ceremony.
One significant moment was the retirement of the old Nigerian Army flag, which was placed in the Army Museum for safekeeping—a symbolic gesture that honors the legacy of the outgoing COAS.
“This tradition underscores the continuity and resilience of the Nigerian Army,” Major General Akpor explained. “It is a tribute to the service and sacrifices of our leaders.”

Challenges Ahead: Bridging the Trust Gap
Despite the optimism surrounding Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s appointment, experts have raised critical questions about the feasibility of his agenda. Nigeria’s security apparatus faces significant challenges, including inadequate funding, political interference, and a growing distrust among citizens.
For his vision of inclusivity and innovation to succeed, analysts argue, the COAS must tackle these systemic barriers head-on. Transparency in military operations and accountability in leadership will be crucial in rebuilding public trust.
A Turning Point in Military Leadership?
Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s inaugural address has set a high bar for his tenure as the Chief of Army Staff. His commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and proactive strategies offers a glimmer of hope in a country yearning for stability.
However, as Nigeria’s security challenges continue to mount, the COAS’s vision will face its ultimate test in implementation. Will his leadership bring the transformative change that the Nigerian Army and the nation so desperately need? Only time will tell.
