In a bid to quell the rising tensions and foster harmonious relations among ethnic communities in Warri South Local Government Area, the Delta State Government (DTSG) has intervened decisively in a manner that is capable of bringing an immediate cessation of hostilities and a commitment to maintaining peace in the region.
In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Kingsley Emu, the government outlined the government’s stance after a comprehensive meeting involving key stakeholders from various ethnic communities in the area. The DTSG warned them to desist from any actions that could disrupt the existing peace in Warri Township.
Among the communities represented at the meeting were Agbara Warri Kingdom, Okere Community (Warri), Itsekiri National Youth Council, Urhobo Progress Union Youth Wing Worldwide, along with security agencies and senior government officials.
The collaborative discussions, conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and a shared sense of civic responsibility towards Warri Township and Delta State at large, resulted in a unanimous decision to maintain the status quo. Notably, the proposal to designate sections of Warri Township as “WADO CITY” was firmly rejected.
Key agreements arising from the deliberations include:
- The headquarters of Urhobo Progress Union (Urhobo House) will retain its official address as No. 18 Okere Road, Warri.
- The State government will reinstall the billboard for the secretariat of the Union, reflecting the agreed-upon address.
- All parties commit to working collaboratively to preserve peace and harmony in Warri Township, crucial for supporting the renewed drive for infrastructural development in the city.
The statement concludes with a stern warning that the State government will take decisive action against anyone found violating the terms of the agreement. The government’s proactive intervention reflects a commitment to maintaining unity and peace among the diverse ethnic communities in Warri.
