YENAGOA, Bayelsa State — Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has expressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to turning Yenagoa, the state capital, into a modern city through an ambitious urban renewal programme.
Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Yenagoa, the governor highlighted the recent relocation of inter-state commercial transporters to a newly established transport terminal at Igbogene as a significant step toward achieving this vision.
Governor Diri underscored the importance of centralised motor parks as hallmarks of urban modernity and noted the terminal’s potential to bolster security and streamline transportation within the state.
He also acknowledged the peaceful Yuletide season, the boost in tourism, and the growing influence of cultural icons like Timaya in enhancing Bayelsa’s reputation as a safe and vibrant destination.
In an impassioned address, the governor called for unity among Bayelsans and urged critics to embrace the progress being made under his leadership.
A Bold Step Toward Urban Modernity
The newly commissioned transport terminal at Igbogene represents a cornerstone of the Diri administration’s urban renewal initiative. Designed to centralise inter-state transportation services, the terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that reflect the governor’s vision of a modern Yenagoa.
Governor Diri, who personally inspected the terminal, described it as a testament to his administration’s commitment to elevating Yenagoa’s status.
“For the first time in our state, we are seeing what a city is like,” he stated. “We want to actually turn Yenagoa into a modern city. We want to bring Yenagoa to a better place.”
The governor also issued a stern warning against touting in and around the terminal. He emphasised that all passengers must conduct their bookings and board vehicles within the premises, a measure aimed at curbing crime and maintaining order.
He added, “For those who want to come into Bayelsa to commit crime, we have stopped them with the movement to the new terminal. Nobody should act like an agbero [tout] in that place. That park is modern with everything provided.”
Enhancing Security and Tourism
The festive season in Bayelsa was notably peaceful, a fact Governor Diri attributed to the collaborative efforts of security agencies. Their vigilance ensured a crime-free Yuletide period, a development that not only safeguarded lives and properties but also created an enabling environment for tourism and entertainment.
One of the highlights of the festive season was the annual Timaya Day concert on January 1, hosted by internationally acclaimed dancehall artist Enetimi Odon, popularly known as Timaya. The event, which attracted thousands of youths, showcased Bayelsa’s cultural vibrancy and tourism potential.
Governor Diri, who attended the concert, praised the youths for their exemplary behaviour during the event.
“Instructively, there was no incident of crime. I was there. The youths were well-behaved and became security by themselves,” he said. “From what I saw, I believe there is hope for this country and for our state.”
He further commended Timaya for his continued contributions to the state’s cultural landscape, noting that such events serve as platforms for promoting peace and unity among Bayelsans.
Addressing Community Challenges
While celebrating the progress made, Governor Diri did not shy away from addressing challenges. The gruesome murder of a community chief in Agbere, Sagbama Local Government Area, cast a shadow over the otherwise peaceful holiday season.
The governor commended the leadership of the Agbere community for maintaining peace and ensuring that the situation did not escalate. He assured the community that an ongoing investigation would bring the perpetrators to justice.
“I thank the leadership of Agbere for not taking the laws into their hands,” Diri said. “We are committed to ensuring that justice is served, and we will unravel those behind this dastardly act.”
