In a historic move, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has witnessed a change of baton at the Rivers Port Complex, as Kenechi Edith Okezie assumes the prestigious position of Port Manager, succeeding Mr. Michael Adamu in a recent reshuffle by the NPA Management under the leadership of Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko.
The transition was formalized during a handing-over ceremony where the outgoing Port Manager, Mr. Michael Adamu, presented a comprehensive handover note, shedding light on key developments within the complex. With 16 Crude Oil terminals and strategic concessions to PTOL and BUA, the Rivers Port Complex faces challenges such as non-operational berths and increased cargo throughput, issues Adamu highlighted for his successor.
In his outgoing address, Adamu emphasized achievements, including the approval of Ibeto Jetty for vessel direct call, successful tugboat commissioning, and a commendable debt recovery of over $10.3 million. He underscored the robust community relationship between the Rivers Port and its host community.
Mrs. Kenechi Okezie, the newly appointed Port Manager, expressed admiration for her predecessor’s managerial acumen and acknowledged the milestones achieved during his tenure. In her inaugural address, she appealed for the support of the management team, recognizing that collaborative efforts are crucial for success. “I need you all, more than you need me,” she stressed.
The dynamic and accomplished Mrs. Okezie outlined four pivotal aspects that will be the focal points of her leadership: the holistic well-being of the staff, enhancement of revenue generation and collection processes, steadfast commitment to delivering exceptional services, and facilitation of seamless trade operations.
Born on October 31, 1975, in Awka-Etiti, Anambra State, Mrs. Kenechi Okezie stands as the youngest and only female Port Manager in the current administration. Her degrees include an MBA from the University of Lagos (2001) and a B.Sc. in marketing from the University of Port Harcourt (1997). She has worked with the Nigerian Ports Authority for 22 years, and she adds commitment and knowledge to her current position.
In 2001, Mrs. Okezie began her career at Tin-can Island Port Lagos as a Senior Marketing Officer. She progressed through a number of positions throughout the years, earning a Post Graduate Diploma in Logistics and Supply Chain Management in 2011. Prior to her most recent appointment, she performed other important roles at Lagos Port Complex, including Personal Assistant to the Port Manager.
Her commitment is evident in diverse contributions, including serving on committees, acting as Rapporteur at the 2018 International African Ports & Harbours (IAPH) Conference in Abuja, and representing NPA at AFCFTA. A member of professional bodies such as CILT and NIM, Mrs. Okezie continues to positively influence the maritime sector.
In addition to her career accomplishments, Mrs. Kenechi Okezie is a proud mother of two girls and a loving wife. Her experience in the maritime sector is a shining example of tenacity, overcoming obstacles, and a will to leave a lasting impression.
