The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought a cybercrime case against Emmanuel, who is a Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University alumnus, on two counts.
Accusation of Guilty: Defendant Acknowledges Using a Fraudulent Identity as “Benjamin Valdez”
Emmanuel was accused of breaking Section 22(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 when he allegedly used his Google account to fraudulently impersonate “Benjamin Valdez” in October 2023 with the intention of benefiting himself. During the court procedures, Emmanuel showed his real colours by entering a “guilty” plea to the allegations.

Usman Ahmed, an EFCC operative, detailed the arrest of the defendant, which transpired based on credible intelligence regarding internet fraud activities in Fine County Estate, Orchid Road, Lekki, Lagos. The arrest yielded substantial findings, including an iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone X, and a Mercedes Benz C300.
Love Scam Confession: Defendant Admits to Benefitting from Criminal Activity
As investigations unfolded, Emmanuel voluntarily admitted to engaging in dating scams, confessing to reaping financial gains of 950 USD and N3.2 million from his involvement in the illicit activity. Prosecution counsel A.S. Wara presented the defendant’s extrajudicial statements, recovered items, and forensic investigation documents, all admitted as exhibits by the court.
Verdict and Penalties: One Year Imprisonment and Asset Forfeiture
Justice Dipeolu, delivering a decisive judgment, sentenced Emmanuel to one year in prison with an option of a N200,000 fine. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of Emmanuel’s iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone X, and the Mercedes Benz C300 to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
