Through Operation SAFE HAVEN, the Nigerian Army has made notable progress in the last two months in reducing the Plateau killings and other criminal activity and fostering peace in the state. The operation has produced significant advancements against killer herdsmen and other non-state actors endangering the security of the region. The Army attributed the success to expanded manpower, cutting-edge technology, and strategic deployments.

One of the biggest victories happened on January 2, 2024, when workers in the Riyom Local Government Area stopped a stolen car and detained two suspects. This success exemplifies the continuous efforts to thwart criminal activities, including illegal gun manufacturing, kidnapping, and attacks on innocent civilians.
When distress calls were received in different locations, security agents acted quickly to engage suspected herders, inappropriately referred to as bandits and criminals. Notable events include the neutralisation of armed robbers and suspects linked to recent attacks in Barkin Ladi and Bokkos Local Government Areas, as well as the arrest of a notorious criminal implicated in kidnappings and isolated homicides.
The arraignment of criminal suspects before the Chief Magistrate court, which guarantees legal repercussions for illicit possession of weapons, demonstrates Operation Safe Haven’s dedication to justice. The operation also targeted gunrunners, leading to the arrest of individuals involved in the proliferation of arms, a critical aspect of the fight against insecurity.
In one of the most significant raids, a local weapon fabrication factory was discovered in Mangu Local Government Area. This operation resulted in the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of a substantial arsenal, emphasizing the authorities’ determination to dismantle criminal infrastructure.
The operations extended beyond Plateau State, with successes in Nasarawa and Bauchi States, reflecting a holistic approach to regional security. The rescue of kidnapping victims, arrest of criminal masterminds, and interception of illegal activities underscore the comprehensive nature of Operation SAFE HAVEN.
In conclusion, over the last two months, 79 individuals have been rescued, numerous weapons have been found, and armed criminals have been neutralised. With 271 individuals detained for crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping, the Nigerian Army is aggressively breaking up criminal networks and bringing charges against those involved. The demolition of illicit arms manufacturing facilities and the retrieval of cattle pilfered serve as another evidence of the commitment to enduring peace.
Operation SAFE HAVEN expressed gratitude to the citizens of Plateau, Kaduna, and Bauchi States for their support and cooperation and echoed the call for peace over violence and adherence to the justice system through these efforts. As the operation intensifies, the Nigerian Army declared its renewed dedication to the security of law-abiding citizens and maintenance of peace in the region.
