ABUJA, Nigeria — In a move that has sent shockwaves throughout Nigeria’s political corridors, President Bola Tinubu extended his most heartfelt congratulations to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on his 68th birthday, while concurrently affirming his “democratic right” to contest for the APC presidential ticket during the 2023 general elections.

This declaration has ignited a maelstrom of debate within the party and among political observers who see it as both a tribute to Osinbajo’s storied past and an overt signal of internal contestation.

Tinubu, whose political acumen has long shaped Nigeria’s modern governance landscape, issued the congratulatory message through his spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

The statement lauded Osinbajo for his pivotal contributions during his tenure as Vice President from 2015 to 2023—a period marked by robust infrastructural development and effective governance alongside President Muhammadu Buhari.

Notably, Osinbajo’s role as Acting President during Buhari’s medical leave in the United Kingdom underscored his capability to steer the nation through turbulent times.

This birthday tribute, however, was more than just a ceremonial acknowledgment. By affirming Osinbajo’s democratic right to vie for the APC presidential ticket in the 2023 general elections, Tinubu implicitly recognised the vibrant, albeit volatile, nature of internal democracy within the party.

Political pundits argue that this endorsement is a double-edged sword—a sincere commendation of Osinbajo’s past achievements, coupled with a tacit admission that the party must accommodate divergent political visions if it is to remain robust and relevant in Nigeria’s high-stakes political arena.

The President also revisited the historical camaraderie he shared with Osinbajo during their early political careers.

Recalling their collaborative work during Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State Governor—where Osinbajo served as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice—the President reminisced about a period of significant political and judicial reforms.

Such nostalgia, however, now faces a stern test as Osinbajo’s bid for the 2023 presidential ticket rekindles longstanding debates about loyalty, ambition, and the true spirit of democratic competition.

Critics within the APC have long speculated on whether Osinbajo’s ambitions could fracture the party’s unity, while supporters contend that his pursuit of the presidency is a necessary expression of political plurality—a cornerstone of any vibrant democracy.

In an era when Nigeria’s political climate is marked by fervent contestation and high-stakes power plays, Tinubu’s statement serves as a rallying cry for democratic engagement within the APC.

It underscores the idea that internal dissent, when exercised within constitutional bounds, need not erode unity but can instead fortify the party’s ideological foundation.

Yet, the endorsement also raises pressing questions: Can the APC’s internal democracy truly withstand the rigours of a high-profile contest, or is this a harbinger of an impending factional schism that could imperil the party’s electoral prospects?

As the nation watches this unfolding drama with bated breath, one thing remains clear—Nigeria’s political future is poised on a knife-edge of ambition, legacy, and the relentless quest for power.

With Tinubu and Osinbajo now publicly acknowledging their diverging political paths, the stage is set for a dramatic showdown that will test the resilience of the APC and potentially reshape Nigeria’s political landscape in the wake of the 2023 general elections.
