A prominent Ogoni sociocultural organization which goes by the name Gbo Kabaari Ogoni has condemned the bloodletting in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In a statement signed by Sent (Dr) Bennett Birabi and Dr Desmond Nbete, Chairman and Secretary respectively, and delivered to The Atlantic Post on Thursday, April 11, the group called for security agencies to enforce law and order in the affected area to forestall further degeneration.
They also appealed to the warring factions to sheathe their sword and embrace peace for the good of Ogoni people.
The full statement reads:
We are deeply saddened by the spate of killings in Khana Local Government Area and other parts of Ogoni. We condemn this in its entirety and call for an immediate end to this madness. We cannot make progress as a people if we continue to turn on each other.
As leaders Gbo Kabaari will not remain silent in the wake of this senseless killing spree in Ogoniland. We have made contact with the Local Government Chairman and the Traditional Leadership structure in the affected communities. We are glad to note that steps are already been taken by both to put an end to this bloodbath. We will intensify in this collaboration until we put a total closure to this.
In the interim, we call on all parties to desist from making inflammatory statement while we work with the leadership structures across all levels, to put an end to this. We call on the Law Enforcement Agencies to proactively maintain peace and ensure a return to normalcy. Ogoni is bleeding and we cannot stand by and allow the haemorrhage to continue.
