In a significant breakthrough, the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, through its ongoing operations in Taraba State, has successfully arrested a notorious gunrunner, a violent extremist, and insurgents, ensuring the region remains free from their grip. The operation led to the recovery of arms, ammunition, and cash.
Gallant troops of the 93 Battalion, part of the 6 Brigade, apprehended Joshua Dutse Idah, a 45-year-old notorious gunrunner involved in illegal arms dealings. Following credible intelligence, the arrest took place on January 20, 2024, in Ibi town, Ibi LGA. Dutse confessed to planning to bring AK 47 Rifles to Katsina State, and a subsequent search of his vehicle yielded 1 PK Machine Gun, 399 rounds of 7.62 mm Special ammunition, and 3 AK 47 Rifle Magazines.
On January 25, 2024, troops acting on information about extremist groups and insurgents around Chanchanji and Sai communities arrested Janet Igohia, 31, in possession of one million, five hundred thousand naira (N1,500,000.00) being ransom payment for an abducted victim. Janet Igohia, married to the leader of a violent extremist group in southern Taraba, divulged her association with high-profile criminals, including late Gana Terwase.
Further operations in Mararaba Baissa community led to the apprehension of two suspected gunrunners, Alhaji Adamu Damisa, 40, and Usman Isah, 44. They were allegedly involved in extrajudicial killings and cattle rustling, with proceeds of 664,000 Naira and 2 Techno mobile phones recovered.
In another development, troops from the 20 Model Battalion arrested Malam Muhammadu Shuaibu, 50, a suspected violent extremist who had been on the run. Preliminary investigations confirmed his identity as a wanted suspect.
The arrests are a major breakthrough in the ongoing effort to stop stop the illicit arms trade and deal with those involved in associated criminal activities. The Army authorities said the suspects and recovered exhibits will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with extant laws.
The 6 Brigade reiterates its commitment to ensuring the safety of citizens by dismantling criminal networks in Taraba State.
